I get an intermitent loud bussing sound from my MacBook Pro 17 inch 2.16 Ghz.

For starters:
You may want to dust out your vents in the rear with a compressed air. Sounds like you have some buildup on the fan blades.
Does it happen when the system has gotten hotter? Or when you run a given application?
