Water spill burned logic board. Any way to get it fixed cheaper?

I spilled a small amount of water onto my macbook air last sunday. I did what I was supposed to do (take the power cord off, dry it, blow try it and put rice around it), but when I turned it on the screen was extremely dark. I can still see a little bit of what was going on on my screen but it was impossible for me to continue using it. I connected my laptop to an external display and everything else works perfectly fine. So I thought it was just a screen problem.

So I took it to an authorized apple repair place to get it checked. And now they told me it will cost me $1000 to fix it ($849 for logic board replacement and $100 something for labor). Is there any way I can get it fixed cheaper? What can't they just fix part of the logic board instead of replacing it?

If it is working fine with an external monitor and you can see a faint/dim image on the laptops LCD, then the problem is with the backlight circuitry.

I highly advise you to remove all sources of electricity - the battery and power adapter - and keep them removed from the laptop until the logic board has been properly cleaned from the liquid damage. This will help minimize further damage. Drying the electronics is not good enough. Water itself does not conduct electricity. The contaminates in the water are what leave residue, corrosion and cause the damage.

You are probably better off sending this in for professional service. There are a number of places out there that will repair the backlight circuitry and properly clean the logic board for about $250.00USD - several reputable ones on eBay.

For a number of reasons Apple will not repair liquid damage devices for less than replacing all affected parts. The main one being the guaranteed longevity of the repair.

If you wish to attempt to clean the motherboard and fix this yourself please let me know. I will advise you in that direction. However, the average person does not have the skill set to do this and the chances of causing further damage exist.

I would love to try sending it to some place that will repair the backlight circuitry. Where can I find them/can you recommend some?

I am just worried that there is no absolute guarantee that I will get my laptop back if I send my computer to someone on ebay... I could just be paranoid... ><
