Capacitor C47 On the Main Board - Can it Be Mounted on the Underside?

Hello:

I have received a Sega CD Model 1, and it looks as though there was an attempt at capacitor replacement previously. C47's entire top of board area has been decimated; no trace exists, let alone the pads for the SMD. However, I am not confident in my ability to pinpoint where (if anywhere) the cap could be bridged on the back of the board.

Does anyone know if this is possible, or is this board simply shot?

@thomaswile give this a good cleaning. Soldering iron, flux and a desoldering braid should clean most of that mess off. After that use some isopropyl alcohol and a cotton tipped applicator to clean that some more. Let's see the bottom of it.

Post some images of the board in your question so that the problem can be seen Here's how on ifixit. Adding images to an existing question.

Chances are that as it is an smd component it won't connect through to the underside of the board as would through hole components.

smd = surface mounted device, so unless the pads that it was connected to were connected to traces that have a link/pin connection through to the underside of the board to other traces, there's not much you can do.

The last picture was good nice image of the damage. Can you upload one zoomed out a slight fraction to show slightly more of the board around it .

@basementdax @oldturkey03 I have a big roll of copper tape now in my arsenal...would that help at all in repairing any of the damaged traces?

@thomaswile as already addressed, we need to see the complete board, both sides. Looks like the traces could be on the bottom side since the VIA's are right there.. Make sure that you post images that are well focused and large enough. Also, there is a variety of different boards out there, hence the importance of good images. It looks like it needs to go to IC15 pin 32

@thomaswile here is what it is supposed to look like

As you can see, (the images are large enough for you to zoom in) the traces from C47 are the Vias connecting to C13 on the underside.

To answer your question "Can it Be Mounted on the Underside?" The answer is, Yes. All you have to do is to clean the mess on top, check the traces and if they are okay, you can solder the capacitor on either side.

Your board may not be as damaged as it looks. Once all the old solder and debris has been removed, you may just be surprised by how little damage there actually is. Give it a try. After all

Apologies; I have added more photos. I am very new to a lot of this and am sorry for misunderstanding any prompts.

@thomaswile it's absolutely no problem. On here, you don't ever have to worry about things like that. Everybody is welcomed at iFixit. I do not see any further traces on the bottom side. I wonder if they come from C13 to the Via of C47. Let's see if we can find out.

Agreed. The board doesn’t look that bad . Just don’t bridge capacitors, like ever!.

Flux and solder braid should clean it up. Then clean with ipa, then flux and tin the pads. If pads are damaged missing show us pictures after clean up .

@basementdax Sadly, that is actually the board after clean-up...no pads, no traces...nothing.
