Model A1312 / Mid 2011 / 2.7 & 3.1 GHz Core i5 or 3.4 GHz Core i7 Processor, ID iMac12,2

iMac A1312 EMC 2429 does not turn on after long dormancy

Acquired this iMac because previous user kept seeing it shutdown after installing MacOS successfully. I'm ready to slather on High Heat JB Weld to the copper pipes on the heat sink after letting it sit in the basement for several years in a dormant state.

There's no reaction when pressing the power button. I'll keep trying several long presses. I'm hoping someone else has successfully brought their iMac from a deep sleep - I have another Intel iMac doing the same thing (C2D not iSeries). Just hoping to try more things before I have to lift the glass to access the diagnostic LEDs.

To diagnose things without opening will require having a way to probe the AC power cord to see if there’s is current flow into the system. Unless you have a breakout box setup this is not something I recommend as you do run the risk of an electrical shock or shorting something out.

Opening the system enough to see the onboard Diagnostic LED glow might offer some useful help. If you don’t even see the glow it’s likely the power supply has failed. If you are able to see the discrete LED’s you should be able to know what needs deeper inspection.

Often times the CMOS battery needs replacement if it sat disconnected from the power.

Let’s not go crazy with JB Weld as that shouldn’t be needed 😣
