Repair guides, support, and troubleshooting information for the first 13-inch MacBook Air to feature Apple's ARM-based M1 SoC (with an 8-core CPU and up to an 8-core GPU). Released in November 2020 and identified by model numbers A2337 or EMC 3598.

Air has black screen except for a thin band across the top

This MacBook Air has a mostly dead screen problem when cold. When you open the screen, it's all black except for a thin band, about half the height of the top menu bar, which is normal. If you wait a couple of minutes, close the lid, then reopen it, the screen may be normal, or it may have thin horizontal lines about 1/8" apart. In the latter case, the lid's subsequent closing and reopening restores the screen to normal function. A hard power cycle solves the problem immediately.

Most of the black screen issues seem to be related to overheating, which is not the problem in this case. The symptoms also don't seem to point to a bad display ribbon cable or connectors, as the screen functions fine afterward. Additionally, the screen functions fine with subsequent closing and opening of the screen until it has been left closed for an extended period, like overnight.

Any thoughts of suggestions?

Fleeting issues like what you are experiencing are always harder to nail down.

When you get the bars does moving the screens angle altering them at all?

With the bottom cover off what happens when you press the T-CON board which is that thin board near the display does touching it with a little pressure alter the bars? And after you recover the screens image does touching it cause it to breakdown? MacBook Air 13" Late 2020 Lower Case Replacement

What happens when you plug in an external display? After starting the system close the lid the external should now be the active screen with a good image, was it? Next reopen the lid is the internal display working or showing bars?

I didn't mention initially that if I bring the cursor to the thin band that shows, you can see the tip of the cursor.

Moving the screen does not change anything when it is malfunctioning or normal.

I have not started a dissection yet, as I wanted to get a sense of where to head before jumping in.

I have not tried an external display, which would greatly help to differentiate the problem.

I will do these tests tomorrow and see what they show. Thank you for the suggestions.

@jmccorison - Let’s see what your testing tells us.

Of the gazillion cables and adapters I have, I don't have one to connect an HDMI display to USB-C/Thunderbolt. One has been ordered, and I will update this post after it has arrived and I've done the test.

Sometimes, life gets in the way... Between caring for an aging parent, everybody getting The Crud, and needing an adapter, this project fell by the wayside. But I'm back at it now.

Connecting an external monitor: With the lid closed, the external monitor takes over as the primary, and everything looks good. Opening the lid shows the internal screen black with the thin line at the top.

I removed the back cover, which immediately resolved the problem. Pressing on the T-CON board and connectors did not cause it to malfunction. Inside the back lip, there was dirt and slight evidence of liquid. I cleaned everything and replaced the back cover, and it continued to work properly. I doubt that is the resolution, but we'll see.
