SSD upgraded okay, adding 2nd HDD and LCD stopped working

Howdy,

Not my first upgrade, it is for one with a problem.

I upgraded the hard drives to SSD without a problem.

I thought I would then add a second 2TB hard drive.

All appeared to go fine, until I powered it up.

The screen displays nothing. According to the internal LEDs, as only the fourth one would not lite, it appeared the panel somehow had died.

I immediately removed the connection for the second hard drive and even the CDROM.

However, it still wouldn't power up.

The replacement one turned up this morning, after fitting it, guess what?

Still no display.

LEDs still showing the panel to be at fault.

Please, any one have any ideas?

After all, it was only by accident that I discovered the second LED also shows if you have a RAM problem and not the main problem listed anywhere.

Thank you,

Simon

You’re on the right path, just the wrong side of the problem. It’s likely the original display is OK. But the cable and/or the logic board connector is messed up.

If you transferred the cable over to the new display then that aims us that way. If the display came with a new cable that aims us to the logic board connector.

you mean the long gold connector with the clip and tag?

Well, the replacement screens cable was slightly bent, so I removed the one from my screen and used it on the new screen.

Which does support the hypothesis that it is the cable.

I guess its cheaper to try and order a replacement one of those than the Logic Board.

thank you so much for taking the time to help :)

@simonedgley - A common issue is the cable is tugged pulling on the logic board connector damaging it and/or the cable. Make sure neither is bent or damaged.

Yes, the gold connector cable is the displays data connection.

just to check.

I am looking for visible damage to the ends.

Even if I don't see it, it could still be there.

As a new data cable is £6 on eBay I am guessing its safest to get one to eliminate that as an issue.

The cheapest a new logic board is £30.

thanks once again

@simonedgley - The cable connector end should be even not chipped and looking down into the socket should not be bent outwards.

Thanks.

Will stick it until the magnifier and see what I can see.

I managed to order another one which should be with me tomorrow.
