I need a photo or diagram showing where exactly is the starter relay?

Sorry for some reason your site didn’t post my text. I have a 2000 Mazda 626 LX 4 cyl. I need a photo or diagram showing EXACTLY where the starter relay is. I know it’s in the engine compartment, prolly 1 of the relays right next to the fuse box. See the photos I just posted. It is not labeled. Not 1 of the relays inside the fuse box.

Can anybody help?

Thanks

Scott

Hey thanks! I checked thoroughly (see photos) those locations in engine compartment but didn’t find anything that looked like a relay. It’s def NOT in the fuse box in the pass compartment. And it looks like it’s not in fuse box in engine compartment. I have electrical wiring diagrams for 1997 (couldn’t find 2000 online) Mazda 626 that show there is a starter interrupt relay somewhere. +12v comes from ignition switch when in start position. Goes first to starter interrupt relay, then if that contact is closed, goes to park/neutral switch on transaxle. Obviously you can only start if you’re in park or neutral. Then +12v goes to relay inside starter, that closes hi current contacts and sends hi current +12v directly from battery to starter motor.

Symptoms are sometimes it won’t start. Most of the time it starts but when it doesn’t you don’t hear the solenoid doing its thing, don’t hear the starter trying to start the engine. Don’t hear any clicking sounds but I’m sitting inside car so I could be too far away. Battery is good, 13v, connections at battery are good. Could be failing starter, failing starter interrupt relay, failing ignition switch, etc.

Thanks Scott

Hi @scottserata,

Check if it is in one of the following locations as shown in the image below. Check if you can hear one of them click when the ignition key is operated

Hi @scottserata

Did you check the three components in front of the main fuse block between the fuse block and the battery, as seen in the image you posted?

They look like some sort of relay to me.

Yes those 3 gray blocks are relays but I don’t think any of them are the starter relay. They aren’t in the diagram that’s on the inside of the fuse box cover, since they are outside of the fuse box. They aren’t labeled. I did a process of elimination. Put trans in park. Verified I can start engine. Then 1 by 1 I disconnected each of those gray relays. None of them prevented the starter from working. So none of them has anything to do with starter circuit.

Unless I made a wrong assumption, that’s my conclusion.

Sounds about right.

Not sure but with a Mazda Protege the starter relay is under the dash near the steering column, so was wondering if it would be the same with a 626. Maybe worth a look given it doesn't seem to be in the engine bay

Ok I’ll take a look. Thanks

I tried prying off plastic panels underneath dash on drivers side. I wasn’t able to remove all the panels because it looks like there are hidden screws (not just those cheap plastic fasteners) holding them on and I can’t find the screws. Don’t wanna break the plastic. There are some relays on drivers side near the fuse box but again doesn’t look like they have anything to do with starter circuit. They’re labeled “unit doorlock timer” or “flasher DOT turn signal”

Couldn’t find any unlabeled relays but I wasn’t able to remove panels near steering wheel. Did remove panel on pass side near glove compartment & don’t see any relays there.

So no luck. I have searched exhaustively on Google for anything like “Where is the starter relay for 2000 Mazda 626” and got 1000’s of hits but none of them are actually what I need.

Thanks

Hey @scottserata,

I am currently in the same situation myself right now, and I cant find any answers, did you ever get your problem fixed?

So after a lot of tearing apart the car looking for a starter relay, I figured out there isn't one. Don’t know how much you understand about basic electronics, but a low current +12v goes from ignition switch (when in start position obviously) to neutral/park switch which I think is physically on the shifter mechanism (not in the transmission) this prevents you from starting the car if the trans is in anything other than neutral or park. So assuming you’re in neutral or park, then the low current +12v goes to control input on the starter. Inside the starter there’s basically 3 things, a high current relay or contactor, the starter motor and solenoid. There is a high current +12v wire from battery to starter that’s always live. When you turn ignition switch, then low current +12 switches on the relay inside the starter which then applies hi current +12 to starter motor and solenoid. Because of course the starter motor and solenoid requires a lot of current. The solenoid shoves the gear on starter into the engine and it engages with a gear in the engine and turns the engine over.

I’m not an auto mechanic so I’m fuzzy on car engines but I’m an electronics engineer so I know electronics.

I still haven’t fixed my intermittent starter problem on the 2000 Mazda 626 but I’m pretty sure it’s the starter. I wanna do the repair job myself but only problem is the starter cannot be reached from above. Only way to get to the starter is to jack the car up.

Good luck!

I'm following, I tore into my vehicle too. The starter was my first replacement(definitely an under the vehicle thing), that's what led me to now think it was a relay issue. I wish not to discourage, I hope changing your starter works! I will definitely repost anything I learn, thank you for the response, good luck as well!!

If you send me an email I can email you scans of relevant pages of the electrical schematics (wiring diagrams). I ended up having to buy an original Mazda 2000 626 wiring diagram manual. Because I searched web exhaustively for the diagrams and everything I found was wrong.
