Repair guides and disassembly information for the MacBook Pro 16'' released in November of 2019. Model A2141, EMC 3347.

Keyboard is fine, but trackpad is not. What to do next?

I have the last model that was made in 2019. It was very expensive, since it has 64GB/RAM, and a 1 TB SSD. I don't want to replace it, and really can't afford to. Note: I am referring to the internal trackpad and keyboard.

About 6 weeks ago, I saw problems with slow charging. Then, all of a sudden the screen went black & it wouldn't start at all. The battery health report says it's fine, but something is very wrong. I bought a new power adapter with higher wattage (140), and it started again. I reset the SMC & NVRAM, made sure I had the latest version of Mac OS (Sequoia 15.6.1); I ran disk utility - in recovery and disk-mounted modes - more times than I can count; I cleaned the keyboard & trackpad; I checked to make sure the firmware was up-to-date. I read up on and adjusted all of the trackpad settings - but nothing has helped.

The trackpad feels depressed; it is incredibly unresponsive. I depend on this computer. I used ifixit's advice and tools to repair my old 2013 13" retina Macbook Pro, so I know I am capable of doing the repairs, but I just don't know what to do next.

I have so much work due, and I am spending all my time tearing my hair out while not succeeding at fixing the blasted trackpad. Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide.

A common cause of problems with Trackpads is liquids as they can wick into the sensor area from around the edge. While you may have not spilled anything on purpose, just the act of cleaning might have done you in.

Here many people spray a cleaner directly onto the uppercase area and then wipe the surface with a clean cloth or paper towel. So without realizing some of the cleaner is pushed into the gap. Instead make sure you spray the cloth and then wipe the system.

Anyways... it sounds like you need a new trackpad which is not hard to replace in this series. Here's the needed part MacBook Pro 16" (2019) Trackpad and here's the guide to put in in MacBook Pro 16" 2019 Trackpad Replacement

But before you do this I do recommend you check your systems Battery! Install this gem of an App! CoconutBattery see how many cycles are left of the 1000 (more that 200 hopefully) as well as what it tells you of the batteries health. If it also needs replacing think when it makes sense. If you are dependent on the system working for your job when do you have a sizable window to replace it.

And of course! Take the time to dust the fan's and heat sinks of debris and dust. Use a small 3/8" painters brush and a can of can'ed Air to scrub lightly and blow out in short shallow bursts the junk..

Thank you so much, @danj! I am going to do everything you suggest. I plan to download/install coconut battery right away. I will keep you posted.

Update: Coconut battery showed that the battery was fine, and since the keyboard works properly, I figured I would open up the back plate & take a took. Note that doing so isn't as easy as it should be: after removing all the screws, you still need to detach it slightly, then gently slide it out towards the front - otherwise you will damage it. Anyway, what I found is that the trackpad connector seems to be a bit awry. I still have parts of the upper case from a previous repair, and although purposely disconnected, it seems to be in better condition. I am uploading 2 photos I took, first of the current machine's trackpad cable, second of the previous one. My questions are: is the not very bad dislodging of the current connector enough to cause the trackpad to be insufficiently responsive, and can I simply replace that one with the one in the second photo? I will be very interested in your thoughts.

@saraw1 - Sorry Sara was out most of Saturday. Sadly I can't see the fist image at full size and in a state that shows any possible damage as such I can't tell you if it's good or bad.

The cable in question is this one MacBook Pro 16" Trackpad Flex Cable (19) if you suspect that's the problem then replacing it with the correct cable is worth a try. But given your problem the cable wouldn't be the issue the trackpad would be MacBook Pro 16" Trackpad/w Screws, Silver or MacBook Pro 16" Trackpad/w Screws, Space Grey if you are in Europe this might be a better source.
