How can I retrieve hard drive model info from a dead drive

Hello...I think my hard drive died last night. Startup disk disk utility doesn't see it, other booting options have failed. Need a recommendation please on a dependable replacement hard drive that is reasonably priced. Will try disk warrior with assistance but am doubtful it will work. Thank you!

Can you post your model info or the last three digits of your serial number so we can better help you. Can you also tell us what size your iBook currently had and what you are looking for if you have any ideas.

One more question... Is there any way at all of extracting or migrating info caught on the old drive? Install disk utility won't even see it. I've read about enclosing it in an external drive case and connecting it to another computer in hopes it will be recognized. Any suggestions aside from data recovery services (the amount of unbacked up data is important but not worth that much). Thank you!

All the older MacBook and MacBook Pro use 2.5" SATA 9.5 mm high, hard drives. Speeds from 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm. Here's just a partial list of drives that will work for you: http://www.ifixit.com/Mac-Parts/MacBook-... Here's more: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-driv... Personally, I really like the Western Digital Scorpio Black 320 GIG 7200 drive. I've installed about 20 of them and never had a failure: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%2...

Hi all... Thank you so much for your replies. After some frantic research on my refurbished Mac and several calls to the store I bought it it from I was able to get the model info-core II duo 2.16 Ghz. Glad for the hard drive referrals here as I'd found and ordered the Scorpio black before getting this post...seeing this recommendation is reassuring. I ordered 500gb/7200 rpm drive plus an extra 2gb RAM. Thank you so much for your help!!

Yes it is...thank you! I found that guide the other day, I've never changed a hard drive before but it seems pretty straightforward.

If disk utility won't see the drive there is little chance of recovery without heroic methods. If you do have an external exclosure, you can try wrapping it in a plastic bag and putting it in the freezer for an hour, then giving it a shot. Try tapping it a couple of times. It's according to what has failed on it.

Great ideas, didn't know about freezing, will definitely try. Just for my information, what are symptoms of logic board failure?
