Disabled display adapter produces red vertical lines on the monitor?

When I boot my computer I receive a prompt that says:

"Incompatible display adapter has been disabled. At least one adapter on the system has been disabled because it's driver is not compatible with the VGA adapter."

There are red vertical lines on the monitor. Every now and then, I can restart the computer and the problem is seemingly fixed. But, it comes back.
