Repair guides, disassembly, and troubleshooting information for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 family of chips, released in October 2024.

MacBook Pro arrived with no charge

MacBook Pro 14 inch (M4 Pro, 12Core, 24GB RAM, 512GB Storage) arrived with no charge. Attached some screenshots from coconut battery.

I bought it new today (Dec 1st 2025) at Best Buy (Coconut battery says battery is from jan 2025). This happened on the first unit I received, so I exchanged it. The second unit had the same state of charge (dead) but is charging fine as I am typing this out. Currently coconut battery is claiming I have 103% Health, but this is strange to me, as a Lithium Ion battery should degrade if left at 0% state of charge for long.

TL;DR: Macbook arrived with zero charge, is charging fine, should I return it and buy from Apple directly?

This is always a tricky question to answer! As each systems condition is different!

Here we have a system sitting unused for nine months in a warehouse. As it’s an older system you are concerned with the batteries lifespan as you have heard Lithium Ion batteries shouldn’t stay discharged (or even fully charged).

So let’s look at this in a different way… you are Apple and you know there is a bit of time between the build of a system and the delivery to you. So you contract the battery makers to over provision the battery’s output so the guaranteed upward is insured for one year sitting in a warehouse.

And you sorta see that as the battery’s 103% of health tells us that. So you don’t need to worry as this system will more likely last a long time.

Hi @danj thanks for your answer!

Quick update: After a full battery calibration cycle ( charged all the way to 100% - then discharged over 1 hr 40min at 100% cpu load, then charged back up to 100%) the state of health is now 98.1%.

I plan to leave this with the screen on and running some videos, to see how long the battery will last in a video playback test.

Maybe I am being over paranoid, but at ~98% SOH should I try getting a different unit? I don't really have a good frame of reference here....

@amansaraf - I think you're over doing it.

CoconutBattery is a near realtime tool as the OS's IRQ for measuring the battery doesn't get a very high priority so it can be off a bit. So you might note the 98.1 will pop back up to 99 or even 100% again. But there are environmental factors at play here. The system needs to be at its ideal temp to cool or to hot will effect the charging and its measure.

Your battery is within reason.

Ok that makes sense! Thank you so much for all your help!

My mind is at peace now!
