is it possible to fix this with just a new flex cable or is it damage to the screen itself? it seems to have happened overnight. definitely didn't drop it. no visible damage to screen. (already ruled out software issues. and apple diagnostics didn't recognize any issues)

Thanks for the picture; that saves us a lot of time with the diagnosis.
That being said, you've got a cracked screen. You see that diagonal line in the lower right corner? That's the crack in the LCD display; there's a front glass that you're seeing that isn't damaged; the LCD glass is behind that and is definitely broken.
Unfortunately, MacBooks secure their displays with really good adhesives; so much so that no one sells just the LCD; you have to replace the entire display assembly - which can get pricey on those puppies. Here's the guide you'd need if you want to do the job yourself.

Thanks for that. I was in denial. I had hoped this laptop would last much longer. I must’ve closed it with something inside.
@joshdeutchman Yeah, sorry for the bad news. You might set up an automatic search on eBay and keep an eye out for the same model that may be being sold for parts that has other issues, or a used display that will be substantially cheaper than a new one.
