MacBook fan runs on high when YouTube videos are played

I've got a customer who claims his MacBook's fan runs very high and loud specifically whenever he plays YouTube videos. He has Leopard and 2GB of RAM. I haven't looked at the machine yet so I'm dealing with only preliminary information, but before I do take a look I was wondering if you guys have any thoughts. He has recently done a clean install of Leopard, and still has the problem, so it doesn't seem it's likely a software issue.

It sounds like his computer is having some issues with video playback and probably anything that makes the processor work a lot. I would make sure there is enough ventilation, specifically, make sure there is no dust covering up vents on the back. Also, (if you are going to be taking the computer apart anyways) check to make sure the logic board and heat sink are screwed down all the way and that the thermal paste between the logic board and heat sink is applied properly.

My MacBook's CPU maxes out when I watch a video on YouTube. The CPU gets hot when it maxes out. The fan goes fast when the CPU gets hot.

Flash will do this on the best of machines, which is why most netbook class machines struggle with it.

Flash is basically all CPU based - until the new version gets out of beta, your CPU does all the work vice the GPU.

You may want to try installing ClicktoFlash. Among other benefits, it allows you to substitute h.264 videos for some flash content, which many Macs can hardware accelerate.
