MBP does not begin. NVidia 8600M GT issues (most probably)

A friend of mine owns this Macbook Pro 15'', Early 2008 (Last model before the Unibody), Intel Dual Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM and a 512GB NVidia 8600M GT.

The other day he turned MBP on and the display was distorted. And just before he could login the system crashed with a message to better do a hardware test...

After a couple of hardware tests the result was the same,

4 VDC 1/40000003: video controller

He took his MBP to an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) and there they ran (I guess also an Apple Hardware Test) and the conclusion was the same. A technician told him that, it must most probably the well known issue

(http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377) for these models, but they needed Apple's clearance to proceed. I don't know their conversation but Apple didn't approved the replacement, without giving any explanation.

I communicated with Apple today and they asked me if the technician ran the "NVidia, so called, Test", rather than the usual Apple Hardware Test. Is there such a test?

We are going to have the MBP re-examined, that's for sure, with an extra care to the NVidia issue...

If it was to repair it myself how difficult would that be???

What would be your opinion?

Update

Well, in case you wonder who to blame, it was the technician's fault...

We took it to a different Authorized Service and they ran the tests once again, and when they got the results and gave them to apple support, the logic board replacement got approved...

Yes, Apple has a specific test for this issue. Any Apple store or Authorized Service Provider should have it. Usually just a standard Apple repair place would have it but this one has not been posted to my knowledge.

FWIW Video Chip replacement is not a DIY task... in fact it's not generally done at all. It takes special tools, skills to remove/replace a CPU or GPU on Apple logic boards. Either Apple does it, or you could DIY replace the entire logic board.

Oh, of course not... I wouldn't dare change the GPU by myself... What I meant was to change the whole logic board... For what I read that's something quite possible.

Though, to find a logic board in a logical price, used perhaps, that is fully operational and that is somehow coming with a "warranty", that's the difficult part...

What I really want to know is if there is such an Nvidia specific test that I, or anyone else can run to examine the GPU...

I have the same issue with the NVIDIA video controller going bad on my MacBook Pro. I called the Apple Store today and was told if the tech comes up with the same results that I did in a test he performs in the Apple Store then it would cost me about $300 (out of my pocket) because my purchase date was 4 years and 1 month ago. Bummer.

Jim - Don't take that answer! Apple will fix this for you for free - You will need to go to a real Apple Store to get it done, and you likely need to talk with the support manager. The secret is pointing him to the web about the law suit Apple lost on this and they will take care of it. point him to these pages - http://www.macworld.com/article/1154456/...
