Why is the drive not detected?

When I plug in the computer USB port the drive is not detected; the green led blinks and I can hear weak continuous beeps. It is a Seagate 750GB external hard drive.

Different USB ports have different power outputs, try a different port as the one you are using may not have enough power for your drive. Does you drive pull all its power from your machine or does it have external power. It might also help to know the machine you have it hooked up to.

Hello our Experts,

Thank tou for your suggestions. This 750gb Seagate external drive was working fine and suddenly stopped. I's one year old. I have a good deal of files stored in it. I am using a mini-USB to USB. I tried to use another cable - mini-USB to dual USB - plugging the two USB connector in a two USB ports of my desktop PC and nothing happened. Any other hints for this trouble will be appreciated.

Thank you for your help,

Sully

It sounds like it may be a hard drive that has gone bad. I would try plugging it back in to the computer and right clicking on Computer (My Computer on WinXP) and selecting Manage. Then click on Disk Management. This should show you if the drive is truly readable. If it does show up here, then it could be that a sector went bad that is preventing it from showing up. This can be fixed with a format. If it still is not showing up here, then I would say that the drive has failed.

In either case, if the drive has information that you truly need, then I would suggest taking it to a hard drive recovery place. This service is very expensive though, so only do this if the information is extremely important.

I have had these fail before and it turns out to be the power board in the unit that powers the drive. The drive itself turned out to be fine. I would crack it open pull out the drive and hook it up inside the pc and see if it still works. If it works then just buy a new enclosure.
