Screen works during boot but goes black once loaded
I have a 2007 15" Macbook Pro that does not want to boot up correctly. When you turn it on the gray screen will come up with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel under it and then the screen blacks out. The computer is still working and if plugged in to an external monitor you can go to about this computer and it does not detect the internal screen. I have tried booting in to safe mode with no change and single user and verbose modes both work and show the text until the system tries to go to graphical mode and then the screen cuts out again. I have tried resetting the PRAM (opt+cmd+p+r at boot) and resetting the SMC by pulling the battery and power cord and holding the power button for 10 seconds. I dont know what else to try and am looking for input.

I am not sure if it is the inverter as I can leave the system in single user mode for a long period and it never stops working. It is as soon as it trys to boot all the way in to OS-X that it goes out.

I just took a short video of what the computer does while trying to boot up. The link is below if it will help.

I tried adding another user by deleting the .applesetupdone file from single user mode to force the setup screen to come up and the screen came back on when it restarted. I logged in to my original profile and everything was working great. I then had to restart the computer after installing some software and it is doing the same thing again. I put it in to standby multiple times with no problems, it only happened when I restarted. I tried making a new user again the same way with no avail. I then just tried restarting the system numerous times and it finally booted up right. As long as I only put it to sleep it works fine, but I know I will eventually need to restart the system. Does this sound like maybe a faulty lcd cable not sending data or something?

Please do post if you have a solution. I'm experiencing the same exact symptoms. Your the third person I know having the same exact issue. I'm starting to think it is a firmware issue, it started after the last software updates were installed. A co-worker has the same model and never upgraded the firmware and his laptop is still running properly

I have a feeling it is a problem with the LCD cable cause I have found that sometimes if I move the screen around I can get it to boot. I believe there is a data channel on that cable that tells the motherboard what screen is plugged in, and if that is not working you the OS would not see the system come up. I have a friend that is buying one of these systems this weekend, and I am going to test my theory...I will get back on here and let you know what I find. If that is the problem, the cables are only $20 on ebay and not to difficult to change.
