This depends on what you are looking for. If you just want to see the SMART data to verify the SMART status of the drive, there's hundreds of utilities that do this. I usually recommend CrystalDiskInfo or Hard Disk Sentenial for this.

If you want to test the drive to make sure it isn't failing, the free option for this is to download the testing tools that are relevant to what hard drive you have. All of the major manufacturers should offer this. If this is not the case, then you will likely need to pay for one. In the paid mode with Hard Disk Sentenial, the option to test the drive is made available. However, other utilities also exist. In some cases, testing the drive CAN wipe the data, so make a backup just to be safe. The utility should warn you if this is the case so you have prior warning, but this may not always be the case.

Sorry, of course there is the widely known CrystalDisk info (and Hard Disk Sentinel), but I was only thinking about Macs, since back then ifixit was heavily about Mac tear downs and repair guides.

Yes, there are those of the HDD manufacturer's and most of them only work under windows. The last time I used one of them (not all manufacturers even had such a tool available) the functionality was very low and didn't give more than the SMART data and it also drew other conclusions out of it (in favour of the manufacturer).

If someone wants to make a into depth sector tests or a burn in test for a new HDD h2testw is also often recommened, but one should make sure to tell the application to stop in the last 1-2GB of the free space of the main system partition, because Windows doesn't like it otherwise.

It can also find false capacity information of flash memory and verify the true capacity.

The h2testw of course can only test free space.

There is an option for Mac users since recently, but I haven't tested it:

It was under Acer Laptop, so I assumed that the OP needed to test in a Windows environment.

Now that you say it... today is the first time I recognize there is a green acer writing on the upper right corner. If you didn't say it, I would have had a hard time figuring out, that it belongs to this topic, because it is so somewhat free-floating and sitting next to the actual question. I can't remember that this was there back then in 2012. strange. My bad.

If your computer uses a Seagate hard drive, download this.

If your computer has a Hitachi drive, download this.

If your computer uses a Western Digital or other brand drive, download this.

Each of these has an expanded or long test which will test each physical sector, and in some cases repair bad sectors by remapping the drive's sector layout.

download SMART Utility from Volitan software. Testversion. SMART is not all precise, but you can see whether it detected bad sectors or interface errors and so on. Apple Hardware Test does nearly find nothing, from my experience. One would need a Apple Service Diagnostics Tool CD, but that is not sold.

I now recommend Drive DX, because of its interface/GUI. It has SMART diagnostics, too and upon installation it has an easy way to enable the function, that you can read the SMART values of external drives, too, which is not possible on Macs from stock. (The extension to read external drives can be installed seperately without Drive DX, but I find it easier this way).

Disk Drill also collects SMART data for you and there is no Test period that ends somewhere.

Volitan's SMART and Drive DX have a Text period. I recommend installing the test versions one after another and then, when they stop working, change to Disk Drill. (Of course you can always buy a license, then I would recommend buying Drive DX).

If you know sudo Terminal commands, you can collect SMART data from the internal drive, too (and probably from external ones, if you have installed the extension I talked about above).
