Background and Identification
An uninterruptible power supply (UPS), also called an uninterruptible power source or battery backup provides emergency power to a load when the input power source fails or voltage drops to a certain level. Uninterruptible power supplies are continual power systems used to protect computers, data centers, electrical equipment, telecommunication equipment, and other hardware where a power disruption could result in injuries, fatalities, data loss, or business disruption.
Uninterruptible power supplies are designed for the safe shutdown of a computer and all connected equipment. A UPS will supply nearly-instantaneous protection from power interruptions by supplying stored energy to connected electronics. Most UPSs use batteries, supercapacitors, or flywheels to generate energy, generally for only a few minutes. UPSs vary in size; they can be used to protect a single computer or entire buildings.
Standby UPSs resort to backup power in the event of blackouts, voltage sags, or voltage surges. When one of these power problems occurs, the UPS switches to direct current (DC) power and inverts it into alternating current (AC) power to run connected equipment.
The world’s largest UPS is the 46-megawatt Battery Electric Storage System in Fairbanks, Alaska. This UPS is designed to power the entire city of Fairbanks and nearby communities during power outages.
