    • Park your car on a level surface.

    • Make sure to put the car in park (first gear for manual transmissions) with the emergency brake engaged.

    • Do not change oil within 2 hours of driving the car to allow the oil time to cool.

Emergency “brake”, not “break”. We’re not taking a break from emergencies.

    • After letting the oil drain for 10 minutes unscrew and remove the oil filter. This is located to the right of the engine when the hood is opened.

    • Place the old oil filter in the oil filter disposal bag.

Before unscrewing the oil filter, punch a few holes in the top of the oil filter housing using an awl + hammer. These vent holes will help quickly drain oil out of the filter housing.

After removing the filter, thoroughly wipe the tray and filter flange clean with a paper towel to remove residual oil and any dirt. The tray usually has a collection of dirt particles on it.

I cannot get the cap off, it will not turn - is there a special wrench?

Have 2017 Subaru Forester. Book says nothing about removing panel to get to the oil plug and this instruction says nothing about removing the panel to get to the oil plug. Looks like I have to pry the panel off to get to the plug but will call Subaru later today to see what they say. Seems ridiculous to have a panel with 5 keepers that have to be removed every time you change the oil just to get to the oil plug and then say nothing in the book about removing the cover. Your instruction also needs updated regarding the oil plug cover on a 2017 Subaru Forester.

If the location of the oil pan and plug has changed, then a new guide should be created for 2017 models. This is labeled 2012-2016 because it applies to those model years. I'm not familiar with the panel under the 2017, so I can't provide any updates.

leaders or quarts of oil? My2016 forester calls for 5.1 quarts of oil

rogerruediger - Ответить

It's Quarts, not Liters. I had updated it in the tools a while ago but missed it in the step. Updated.

I have a lot of problems with all of my 2016 Forester manuals. They put numbers on the illustrations, but no numbers in the manual. My Sirius XM manual is at least 6 times thicker than the owner's manual. Why isn't there instructions on how to refill all the fluids in the maintenance manual. I don't need to take it to the dealer for everything!

If you have a big problem with removing a few fasteners to get to the oil drain plug, then bring it to the dealer to do.

Plug location will be at the lowest point of the oil pan for a complete drain. And like most newer engines this plug will be magnetic, so wipe that off too before re-installation. So when a real mechanic looks at the plug they can look at the metal and see if you are having a problem with the engine with excessive wear.

I just (12-13-2016) finished changing oil on 2017 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5 at 485 miles (yes, four hundred eighty five miles.) Wanted to get rid of Idemitsu oil (Subaru oil) with a NOACK number of 13.8 and use AmsOil's Signature series with a NOACK of 10.0 NOACK is a measure of vaporization of oil, and a lower number is better. That is why Idemitsu oil has to be changed every 5,000-6,000 miles while AmsOil Signature series is 25,000 miles or one year.

Yes, you do have to remove the plate; one of the plastic fasteners screws out and the others must be pried out. I tried to remove the oil using my Pela vacuum pump, but that only removed just under 4 quarts. There is a drop down sump in the oil pan that holds about 1.25 quarts. Use a 14mm socket. The drain plug is really tight. The push in plastic fasteners are hard to get back in; just push REAL hard.

2017 non-turbo oil change at 3500 miles. Oil change was a snap. The oil drain panel centered on the belly pan is etched with Engine Oil Drain but not easy to read when one is lying down with face inches away. The five fasteners on the oil drain panel were easy to remove with 1/4 turn while prying a little on edge near each fastener. Fasteners popped right back in. The 14mm plug was very tight but came loose without a breaker bar. Seemed to need a little more than the 5.1 quarts indicated.

What is the code for oil change on 2016 Subaru and how can one enter that code into car's memory?

arhys909 - Ответить

Just changed oil on my 2013 forester, and was surprised that my mobile1 extended life filter was a smaller diameter than the last one in place. Otherwise, a snap.

One addition to consider: It would be useful to explain how to properly tighten the filter.

Thanks!

Don't forget about the special Subaru oil filter washer! #803916010

I've heard about some very messy situations when people forget to replace this washer under the filter.

Would only add that after completing the oil change, reset the maintenance tracker in the dash computer.

My 2014 has a big letter “A” next to it, it’s a 17mm so I expect oil will come out there when I open it. This is my first time changing oil in this car.
