If you have a MIDI controller with keys that don't function correctly, it's often due to dust or a faulty connection. This guide can help fix it. Here's a quick and easy way to fix a broken key on an Akai MPK mini keyboard in under 20 minutes!

Be sure to identify which key isn't working. For me, it was the first key, or the "C" key on the keyboard.

Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove all twelve 2.6 mm screws from the bottom cover.

Carefully remove the top lid, but do not separate the bottom cover from the lid as the two pieces are connected internally by a thin ribbon cable about an inch wide.

Set the keyboard in a similar position in the picture, using a paperweight to hold the cover in place. I used the aluminum foil tape you need for the project

Find your section of the keyboard and remove the 4 screws holding the keys in place. Then slowly lift the top keys away from the board.

Each key correlates to one of these buttons or "carbon boots" which typically has lost its conductivity. Identify which boots/buttons are faulty and use the screwdriver to peel it back, exposing the circuitry under said button, which touches the board when you hit a key.

Cut (2) 1x1mm sized tabs of aluminum foil tape, and stick them to the underside of the button, foil facing the motherboard, then lay the keys back in place.

Test the faulty key to make sure the connection is working. (You should hear that note being played)

Reset and resecure the keys, then slide the cover back on, same as before. Finally, re screw the 12 screws in the back cover and enjoy your AKAI MPK mini!
