Upgrade the RAM in your Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13" Unibody.

    • Three 14.4 mm Phillips #00 screws

How much weight can I save by removing the optical drive?

    gunes314 - Ответить

You can save a lot of weight if lets say your installing a solid state drive or putting in a second hard drive but if you know that you use the CD/DVD disc drive a lot then you might just want to leave the drive alone.

    Marshall WahlstromHelgren -

Tip: Use one of those weekday pill holders to have a cheep way to store screws you remove and each day of the week can be for different sizes or parts. It has been handy to have (much less expensive than the magnetic mat.

Hello, where can I buy the screws I need in case I lose one of them?

    taylornya - Ответить

I have one stripped screw... How opening without drill it?! Any suggestions please?

    rodrigosady - Ответить

I also stripped a couple screws. I wasn’t able to open it up without drilling. After drilling the heads and removing the cover it was easy to hacksaw the tip and unscrew with a standard driver.

    Michael Wilkens -

My top tip - make sure you buy good quality Phillips screwdrivers and a magnetic holder. Cheap screwdrivers won’t get the screws undone safely. Without a magnetic holder you have no chance of getting the tiny crews in and out safely.

    jeremyyoung - Ответить

A good Phillips 00 is your friend here. Also, when reinserting the screws, gently start anticlockwise and you wil feel a click at the start of the thread. This tells you you’re in the right place and less likely to cross-thread through force in the wrong place.

I feel like these are 000 screws. Amazon sales describe them as such and my 000 screwdriver fits better

  3. Use the edge of a spudger to pry the battery connector upwards from its socket on the logic board. It is useful to pry upward on both short sides of the connector to "walk" it out of its socket. Be careful with the corners of the connectors, they can be easily broken off.

Is this step of removing the battery connector required?

    manodh - Ответить

yes - as with disassembly of any electronic component you have to remove any power source. You don't want to accidentally turn the Mac on

    khull -

Prying the battery connector off does not take much force. I did exactly what the guide suggested (walked it off back and forth) with the spudger without any problems. Just be very gentle, much like with anything inside laptops, they are very fragile and need to be worked with carefully. A+ instructions, battery replacement was a success.

    aekinaka - Ответить

Be patient on disconnecting this one. It worked for me step by step, little by little.

  4. Bend the battery cable slightly away from its socket on the logic board so it does not accidentally connect itself while you work.

I put some tape between the connector and socket while working on the drive.

    That's a good tip

    Anrothan -

Great tip, I did that too

One other note: The screw heads fit flush with the curvature of the case -- which means that they aren't exactly horizontal. In other words, they aren't perpendicular to the table that the computer is resting on. Don't try to force them straight in vertically, because you'll risk cross-threading them. (nearly ruined one screw hole myself!)

On my MacBook Pro, the connector seems to be an integral part of the battery.

  6. Pull the RAM stick out of its socket.
    • Pull the RAM stick out of its socket.

    • Repeat this process to remove the second RAM chip.

After replacing the RAM my macbook did not start anymore. Only if I take out one Ram it works. Does anyone knows why.

    joelcroese - Ответить

Hello Joelcroese, have you a issue about your problem, because i have actually this problem ? ... Thanks for your feed back.

    Remy Duprat -

Make sure both your RAM chips are running at the same speed - don't know about the Macbook but it will cause other machines to not recognize the RAM at all or only pick up one stick -

    melindaruth -

Is the channel configuration of your ram sticks correct? Mac needs 9-9-9-24 channel configuration. Something like Corsair Mac Memory or the kit that iFixit provides are in the correct channel configuration.

    Seji the veggie - Ответить

    Just to point out:

    1. Do not press again the locker.

    2. Changed the bottom RAM first.

    3. Put nicely, gently to the slot. Cue for you. You must see the label of the manufacture.

    4. Close everything.

    5. Switch the Mac and check "Finder>About my Mac" show the correct RAM.

Thank you, Phillip! I have now (just recently) used FOUR of your guides—1) HARD-DRIVE replacement, 2) hard-drive CABLE replacement, 3) BATTERY replacement, and 4) RAM upgrade installation—to successfully refurbish my daughter’s late-2011, 13.3-inch MacBook Pro and, thereby, hopefully, add a few more years to its useful life. Thanks, again!

    Sincerely,

My mid-2012 2.5 i5 works perfectly with 16 Gb of 1600Mhz DDR3.

Just replaced my 4GB with 16GB of PNY from Best Buy. AWESOME difference in performance!!

Michael Chandler -

Could you please specify the memory chip that you bought? I need more details in order to get the right one, thanks!

Lin -

Any memory kit that is either validated by Apple or that has the proper channel configuration (9-9-9-24) is okay to use. If you are looking for pure performance RAM, a kit of Corsair Vengeance RAM is okay to use (again, check the channel configuration), but most people will benefit from a kit of Corsair Mac Memory or the kit that iFixit provides in the volume of your choice.

IThis great I actually added 16GB ram into mine. I purchased from bestbuy. Got a great deal! They price match!

7 December 2015: Successfully used this guide on my new BTO Mid 2012 i7 13" - really nice to have this tutorial up on my iMac while I did this - nice to "check off" the steps.

I remembered from somewhere that one at least used to have to reset the PRAM/SMC, but, it recognized the new RAM amount of 16 glorious GB with no problem.

I think disconnecting the battery had the same effect, as the Date reverted not quite to 1969 - that also updated with no problem.

Thanks!

I just changed out my RAM chip with 8 GB chip bought from you. It was very easy with your guide to follow. The employes I talked with were very knowledgable and helpful. Thank you

Thanks IFixit!

My mid-2012 13” says it has 4GB RAM and I want to upgrade to 8GB. Do I need to get 2 X 4GB or just 1 X 8GB? If I get just 1 X 8GB can I leave the old RAM in the 2nd slot?

Mark Chandler - Ответить

Either 2 X 4GB or 1 X 8GB will work, but not one of each. Whenever you install multiple RAM sticks in a machine they should be exactly the same manufacturer and model. So if you wanted to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB you should either buy another identical 4GB stick and install it alongside the original, or remove the original and buy either two new 4GB sticks or one 8GB stick. Either choice will effectively provide the same result. Hope this helps!

For many people it is worth cleaning out the muck & “belly button” fluff from the fan while you are in there. Adds on another 10 mins to the job and does wonders for the cooling system. Cheaper to clean the fan than to replace burned out boards etc

what is the maximum RAM can be installed in macbook pro 13” mid 2012? is 2x8GB the maximum?

16GB in the 2 X 8GB configuration is the maximum supported, and it’s worth it if you’re using Garage Band, iMovie, Photoshop, etc…

I just upgraded my Mid-2012 Non-Retina MBP (2.9GHz i7, 750GB@5400RPM) from 2x 4GB DDR3-1600 to 2x 8GB DDR3-1600. So far it works flawlessly and I am about to upgrade the hard drive in it to a 1TB SSD. I am installing Crucial memory and their MX500 SSD.

Well, it’s 2019 and I just did this to my old 2012. It was quite easy. Reading comments I realized the main concern regarding disconnecting the battery is to avoid frying the motherboard by accidentally touching areas with something conductive and I agree.

The first re-boot showed only one bay in use and I had to check and found out I didn’t push the top memory card hard enough but once I fix this hiccup and re-booted again I saw the new 16gb and my loving MacBook Pro comes to life so fast!

I just upgraded my RAM from 4GB to 16, and I don’t even recognize this computer. The difference in performance is so off the charts it’s like having a new computer. I’d intentionally gone for an older model because there certain components I needed to work remotely, and had been really regretting my decision. Now the only thing I’m upset about is how long I waited. Thank you for the clear and detailed guide on how to do this.

Jayce Ellis - Ответить

So i got my 2 8 GB ram and installed it in 5 minutes. Laptop runs very fast now like its nearly new. Thank you ifixit. Next up is battery, then hard drive. Going to save up for those two.

ive just replaced my old 2x4gb with 2x8gb (16gb) and my mac is now making a very hight pitched but quiet background noise, im guessing from the power draw or something? is theyre anyway to make this stop?

Clemens Weileder - Ответить

I can’t be certain but it could be coil whine. See if it sounds like this. If it is in fact coil whine the best you can do is reinstall the RAM and see if that fixes it. If not, request a replacement from customer service and see if that fixes it. Good luck!

2021 Jan. 30: I just installed 2 x 8GB RAM (16GB total) in my 13” mid-2012 MacBook Pro (“MBP”), to replace the 2 x 2GB RAM that came in it. An apple tech (“Advisor”) told me that his tech notes at Apple say that my MBP does support 16GB RAM, and after a few minutes of testing with the new RAM, the MBP works significantly faster (from a little bit, to lots, depending on the app or function) :-)

I bought the 2 new 8GB RAM modules/”sticks” that I installed from Best Buy, and they are PNY brand, model #MN8GSD31600LV (DDR3, 1600MHz, 1.35V, CAS 11), at $40 each ($80 + tax, total).

Dear Madam, dear Sir, I followed the apple tutorial to change the ram of my early2011 Macbookpro.Unlike in iFixit tuto, it is not specified to disconnect the battery prior RAM removal/installation. Now the machine does not start, even if I replace the old ram.

Mac does not react anymore, magsafe is not even recognised

I already tried the SMC reset using shift+ctrl+option + power 10s , unfortunately it did not work.

Is there any trick?

I had to proceed to dust removal, do you believe I generated some shortcuts somewhere or the fact that I removed the ram without disconnecting battery is the main issue?

Pierre Panine - Ответить

I solved the issue: Opened again the mac. Disconnected the battery. connected the magsafe charger. restart mac. close the mac without stop it. wait the fan stop. reconnect the battery. Connect the magsafe, now it works back as before

Pierre Panine -

We’re glad it works! In the future, we recommend following our guides. We always instruct to disconnect the battery as soon as possible during upgrades or repairs to prevent damage.

Sam Omiotek -

Just upgraded by 4GB to 16GB RAM with the toolkit I bought from iFixit.

It was my first ever Mac repair/upgrade, but thanks to the detailed step-by-step guide and the repair kit it went like a breeze.

very happy with the result, next is upgrading my old HDD with SSD
