    • Using a plastic opening tool, remove the thin plastic cover from back of the tablet by prying up from its small tab.

    • Remove the five 2mm screws on the back of the device using a PH00 screwdriver.

    • Pry the device apart by inserting a plastic opening tool in the seam between the plastic backing and display assembly. Use the tool to unclip the plastic tabs in between the backing and the display.

    • Pull the the plastic backing off the display assembly using your hands.

    • Do not do this step with only your hands. You will require a significant amount of force to separate the device.

Be carefull with the power button cable. Don’t insert the plastic tool in this zone

Some instruction guides also suggest optional use of a suction cup with which to tug on the glass while separating the plastic backing. I found this helpful. Also, if you have a spudger of more rigid plastic, use that one here. My blue spudgers got chewed up pretty badly during this process.

I found that the top right (looking at the screen) doesn’t have any corner clips, just a metal antenna (?), so it is easiest to get this corner popped first and then work your way around. The bottom corners have clips which are tough to undo.

    • Detach the three connector ribbons passing over the battery using the plastic opening tool.

The left two connectors flip up from the cable side. The right connector flips up from opposite the cable.

Note that you don’t just pull the ribbons out. There is a clamp on each connector that needs to be prised opened, releasing the ribbon. This was helpful: https://youtu.be/yru4k62qdEU?t=302

    • Remove the twelve 2mm screws around the perimeter of the battery with a PH00 screwdriver.

    • Disconnect the battery by lifting it upward and pulling it away from the connector.

When reassembling reconnect the data ribbon cables first, then connect the battery connection last so that you’re not plugging in data lines while powered. Ideally you’d disconnect the battery first but that’s a bit hard with the design so you just have to try to ensure it’s switched off first.

I am not never before doing something like this before, but now i do this battery replacement and it worked very well. Maybe there could be more text describing steps 4 and 6 those were parts were me as complete novice had most difficult to understand at first. Step 4 you should say that you need to open that small lever-thing what locks ribboncables in its place (picture here is accurate, but i did not understand it at first). And step 6 disconnecting actual battery cable were more simple than i first thought, just lifting it upwards and then its basically free already just pull it away. Same connecting new battery cable back is same kind simple, just push it back there but better to do it first time right since that connector loosens easily i think.

I would agree with above comment about the ribbon cable levers. I was able to get them out easily but it was not until I understood how they worked that I successfully was able to get the ribbon cables reconnected.

After the replacement there is the maximum charge 42%.

Anybody dies know anything about this Problem?

The back cover is one tough motherFer. The hardest is get to the pins behind the both speakers and in the curved corners. But the overall design is so cool

Thanks for the guide! I do have a question, wondering if anyone can help. On the motherboard, when looking at the back about 1/3 from the left side when you're looking at the back with the battery toward the bottom and the motherboard toward the top, there is a small ribbon cable, maybe only 3/8-1/2 inch wide, that snakes over from the bottom of the board. Mine had written on it 12J1.

When I removed the back, this ribbon was floating free. It seemed like it should be reconnected, and I tried, but it isn't quite long enough to reconnect without a bit of surgery to the board's frame. Since it wasn't connected, and didn't seem like it wanted to be, I left it unconnected.

The Nexus 10 seems to work in its basic functions without it, though I really want to know what that connector is for, and why it wasn't hooked up, and whether I need to try to hook it up. (I will have to do a bit of dremeling.) What am I missing by not having that ribbon connector hooked up?

Hi friend, I think it’s for magnetic charger.

Look at this:

I connected it of course but you can not do it.

What should be used to remove the cover if not your hands? Is there a tool for this step?

Forever Purple - Ответить

Yeap, I used a credit card but you can buy this:

iFixit Opening Tool

In response to Forever Purple's question;

Amazon sells the prying tool and a PH00 screwdriver. You can get it as a set with the battery for under 40$. If you have a new battery already I am sure that you can buy the tools separately. Its just a cheap little plastic tool with a flat edge or a curved one for prying. Never use metal tools.

I hope this helps.

Thanks I found a kit with the battery and tools. Battery replaced but now my touch screen isn't working. I'm rechecking my cables now.

Forever Purple - Ответить

Fixed the screen but I guess I can't post an image. Lining up the white lines on the two left cables is key. The far left slipped back just a bit. I'm up and running now.

Thanks for the guide, changing the battery worked all well and went pretty smooth for me! Having changed batteries in some other devices (android and iphone) before, i would say the Nexus is far better maintainable than most others, in particular the iphones (in partiuclar, opening and closing the device, battery fixed by screws, connectors).

Thanks also to the comments, particularly on how to disonnect cables; maybe these could be included in the main description, would have been really helpful to me.

Replaced battery and now the unit will not power up! Battery with lightning bolt comes up if unit is plugged in and hit power button. even if I hold down power button it just keeps cycling the battery symbol. Tried re connecting original battery with same result. Not sure what I did to brick unit but my PC doesn’t see it when connected to usb. Did I kill it?

Chris - Ответить

The back cover is nearly impossible to remove. It took me five separate tools, a half an hour, and tremendous physical force. And mangled its corners in the process. But the worst part is that when everything was finally re-assembled, and all connections double-checked, the unit was completely dead with new battery installed. So along with the money wasted, a lot of time was thrown down the drain. This is the principal reason people just throw things away nowadays when they develop a fault (which is often). Life’s too short.

Be VERY careful next to the power and volume buttons. There is a ribbon cable immediately inside there and I ripped it when I did this repair. Helpfully I can order that as well from ebay but as a warning to others - keep tools away from the area by the buttons! I also suspect that’s what has happened to the units that now have new batteries but won’t turn on…

Overall good guide, but could have used more details on step 3, just did not even see where the gap was originally -- it was extremely difficult and nerve wracking trying to get the back off while worrying about chipping or cracking the screen. Also, as someone who's never done a repair like this before, total time was closer to an hour. Recommend this video guide as a supplement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yru4k62q...
