Turn over the laptop. Press the latch to remove the battery.

Remove the screw on the bottom next to the hard drive. It is under the palmrest on the side opposite the battery.

Now pull strongly but gently without shaking on the hard drive, it's next to the audio jacks. Don't yank out the audio jacks.

Open your computer's latch.

Now you're complete with it. Put a new hard drive (or ssd) inside if desired, or put back in the old hd.

what if the HD cover is missing? where do I find a replacement? what SSD still work on these vintage laptops?

The hard drive on this laptop is a very old hard drive using an old connector called IDE.
IDE hard drives are not common nowadays, but you can find replacement SSD by searching the following terms on the internet : 2.5" IDE SSD
