Removing the display requires cutting through the adhesive around the perimeter of the screen. After the adhesive is cut, it cannot be used to re-seal the display. You'll need to apply a new set of adhesive strips to ensure a proper seal.

    • With the hinge free to move, the iMac will be unbalanced and hard to work on. Repairs can be completed as shown, but are faster and easier with an iMac service wedge.

    • If you are not using an iMac service wedge, be very careful when installing and working behind the display—it can easily fall out and break if the iMac moves unexpectedly.

2 Kitchen Paper Towel Rolls do the same job as the Wedge just fine .. :)

    • Peel off the old strips of adhesive using tweezers or your fingers. Start at the bottom and peel upward towards the top of the device.

    • After all the old adhesive is removed, carefully clean the area under the adhesive with 90% (or greater) isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Wipe in one direction, not back and forth.

    • Don't skip this step, or your new adhesive strips may not bond properly, and the display may fall out of your iMac.

Depending on what adhesive you are removing, I find that using something like Goo Gone Goop adhesive remover is very helpful.

If it is the original foam based adhesive, then that can usually be taken off without the adhesive remover, but with these after market glue strips, the adhesive remover is best.

    G Trieste - Ответить

Safer to stick with alcohol as recommended in the guide—a lot of adhesive removers can leave oils behind, which prevents the new adhesive from bonding properly. Weeks or months later, the whole screen falls out. If the adhesive is really stubborn and you must use something like Goo Gone, wipe it down thoroughly with alcohol afterward.

Spudger and tweezers couldn’t seem to get enough under the strip to grab. I had to use a low-angle edge of an Xacto blade.

The info comment makes no sense. If you have to "re-stick it" then you have already peeled off the lower backing strip. If "it" means the upper portion of the strip, the use of a pronoun instead of naming the part specifically is confusing.

Yes, all of the other strips go on without problem, but every strip kit I’ve ordered has the 4L and 4R strips reversed (like in the picture). And pulling the red tab usually doesn’t work at all. Why aren’t they just made like the rest of the strips?

Very important in case of iMac 2017 - 4R strip covers the microphone holes. With the kit provided you have to split 4R strip into two pieces, cut out part of it to leave space where the mic is - slightly on the right from the apple logo (you can see there very small holes) . If not, you will cover whole area and mic will not work properly. I was freaking out during the re-assembling my iMac as I thought I have demaged the mic’s gentle cable. Apparently I haven’t it was just the stripe.

At this step, make sure that the camera is correctly positioned in front of the opening of the window. Indeed, you may notice that the camera, although attached to the chassis, has a flexible mount and can move slightly from left to right and from top to bottom. This mounting allows, I guess, to properly wedge the camera when we plate the screen on the chassis.

In my case, although the screen was perfectly aligned at the bottom left and right corners, the camera had to be positioned incorrectly because the screen did not fit snugly on the chassis. It is almost invisible to the naked eye, but it does not plate perfectly.

Be sure to check this point before removing the protections from the adhesives by playing on the mounting bracket of the camera mount.

It is MUCH easier to just align the bottom edge, then use painters tape to attach the glass at the bottom. Flip the screen forward so that you can see both tabs 4L and 4R. Carefully expose the adhesive at the bottom. Connect the two top cables, clean the webcam. Finally peel tabs 5 and 3 from the bottom up. Lastly while you can see everything, peel both sides of tabs 1 & 2. Then just press everything down squarely. (The biggest issue is that the tabs do not come off easily and removing the tabs while you can see them is the key here.)

Be VERY CAREFUL with the bottom strips. I found them very difficult. The front peeled off first allowing the strips to stretch. Made it work but went slow and meticulously. I found the use of a headlamp useful instead of a flashlight.

I’ve just upgraded the RAM in two iMacs requiring adhesive strips and had a problem both times. In the first, the white tape on the lower part of the ‘3’ strip broke leaving about 50% behind.. In the second, both ‘2’ tags came off the white tape leaving all the tape still attached to the sticky layer. Both these instances caused a major problem as part of the screen was already stuck down. I had to try to make a gap between the screen and the case to insert a craft knife to loosen an edge of the white tape so I could grab it with my tweezers. Nightmare! Perhaps the adhesive strip kits sold in Europe aren’t as good quality as the ones sold in the US.

Thank you iFixIt for top notch parts, instructions and tutorials. The reassembly went smoothly, removing the adhesive on the iMac was much easier than the iWatch I performed earlier. The adhesive strips went on easily (kudos for the alignment notches). Like previous comments, the only issue I had was w/ the bottom strips (4L/4R) in that the backing doesn’t want to release and the backing with the adhesive strip actually releases from the front backing instead. I carefully teased the adhesive from front backing with the bent tip iFixIt tweezers and then was able to get the backing released, but it wasn’t optimal because the front backing was slightly releasing from the adhesive as I was applying it and if not careful would stretch a bit which could cause miss-alignment when you get to the end of the adhesive. All-in-all the reassembly of the iMac is one of the easier ones.
