Week of Console Teardowns

To celebrate the completion of our console repair guides and our new game console parts store, we are releasing one retro game console teardown a day for a week.

Why are you doing this?

We wanted to showcase the roots of today's game consoles by exploring the game console technology of the 1970s and 80s. So we got our hands on some staples of the industry -- dating all the way back to 1975 -- and took them apart in true iFixit fashion! The consoles will remain a mystery until the release day, so stay tuned to this wiki or our blog to see the teardown du jour!

But the real reason why we're doing this is to empower people. The game console industry is hostile to consumers: goliath manufacturers have shipped hundreds of millions of units to consumers with no information on how to maintain or repair them. Console owners are left with few options when their warranty expires, causing many to throw away broken units.

We feel this is wrong, and our solution is to provide an open source repair manual for every game console.

What are you trying to accomplish?

People want to be able to service their own hardware, and we're here to help. iFixit game console manuals walk you step-by-step through performing 206 different repairs and upgrades. Each console has a troubleshooting page to help diagnose what’s wrong and to suggest what to do to fix it.

Who stands to benefit from this?

Everyone. Consumers will be empowered to fix their own game consoles. The Earth will have less waste in its back yard. The game manufacturers' employees can use the manuals for research and development. iFixit can continue to fund its mission to fix the world. There's more win here than a barrel full of monkeys.

What is the best game console of all time?

Depends on what you mean by "best." However, we all know that the best console was the SNES, just because it had Super Mario World.

When are you going to take apart Microsoft Kinect?

November 4, 2010, unless you happen to know someone at Microsoft who can get us one earlier ;)

November 4th has come, and as promised, here is our Kinect Teardown.
