October 8th is International Community Day, and we’re super excited to shine a light on one of the most inspiring places for creativity and collaboration—Makerspaces. 

These community hubs are where tools meet hands-on learning, and people from all walks of life gather to create, repair, and innovate. On this special day, let’s explore what makes these spaces so important and how you can find one near you. 

What are Makerspaces anyway?

The big picture response is that Makerspaces are a critical part of the DIY movement. If you’ve never been to a Makerspace before, think of it as a shared workshop where you have access to different tools that can help bring your ideas to life. Whether you’re building a robot, fixing your laptop, or learning how to solder; Makerspaces can help you do all of that and much much more. 

These spaces are filled with equipment like: 3D printers, sewing machines, laser cutters, and traditional hand tools. 

ProTip: Not all Makerspaces will have access to everything you’ll need for your project. It’s possible that the Makerspace near you has limited space and availability of tools. If you already know what you want to work on, call ahead or check online to see if they can support your idea.

The Power of Soldering in Makerspaces!

One of the most satisfying (and surprisingly simple) skills you can learn in a Makerspace is soldering. Learning to solder is the key to unlocking the world of electronics repair and creation. Whether you’re fixing a frayed wire in an old device or building something from scratch, knowing how to solder gives you a huge advantage.
