Celebrating the Heart of Repair!

Happy International Community Day!

October 8th is International Community Day, and we’re super excited to shine a light on one of the most inspiring places for creativity and collaboration—Makerspaces.

These community hubs are where tools meet hands-on learning, and people from all walks of life gather to create, repair, and innovate. On this special day, let’s explore what makes these spaces so important and how you can find one near you.

What are Makerspaces anyway?

The big picture response is that Makerspaces are a critical part of the DIY movement. If you’ve never been to a Makerspace before, think of it as a shared workshop where you have access to different tools that can help bring your ideas to life. Whether you’re building a robot, fixing your laptop, or learning how to solder; Makerspaces can help you do all of that and much much more.

These spaces are filled with equipment like: 3D printers, sewing machines, laser cutters, and traditional hand tools.

ProTip: Not all Makerspaces will have access to everything you’ll need for your project. It’s possible that the Makerspace near you has limited space and availability of tools. If you already know what you want to work on, call ahead or check online to see if they can support your idea.

Makerspaces aren’t just about tools. It’s about the people, too.

Community is the heartbeat of a Makerspace. The walls of these dedicated workshops are filled with people who are ready to share their knowledge to help you accomplish your project.

These spaces foster a culture where members can teach each other new skills and collaborate in ways that help make your ideas possible. Not to mention, the added advantage of working together helps you to pick up skills that can help with future projects and ideas.

Whether you’re an experienced maker or just getting started, you’ll find plenty of folks who are ready to help.

ProTip: It might be overwhelming to think about walking into one of these spaces. But, just know that every idea that comes through the door is welcomed. The spirit of DIY is rooted in making sure everyone feels supported and encouraged to do the thing they came to do. So don’t be shy. If you want to make something, this might be a good first stop on that journey.

How to find a Makerspace?

Makerspaces are popping up everywhere. From big cities to rural towns, these hubs of creativity are becoming an essential part of the local community.

Nation of Makers put together an awesome resource for you to look up maker events in your area. You can search by distance, a specific date range; you can even filter by kid-friendly events and whether or not you want to be in-person or on demand.

The Power of Soldering in Makerspaces!

One of the most satisfying (and surprisingly simple) skills you can learn in a Makerspace is soldering. Learning to solder is the key to unlocking the world of electronics repair and creation. Whether you’re fixing a frayed wire in an old device or building something from scratch, knowing how to solder gives you a huge advantage.

ProTip: It’s no secret that each year more and more of our stuff is being made with soldered-in components. This means that if you want to continue being able to repair your things, you’ll need to consider adding soldering to your skill set.

Soldering can be a little intimidating, mostly because there’s a lot of myths out there about it. But if you want to take baby steps towards the truth, we recommend checking out a Makerspace that offers hands-on soldering classes, where you can learn everything from the basics to advanced techniques.

Makerspaces that focus on electronics often have dedicated soldering stations, complete with all the tools you need to get started. Places like Noisebridge in San Francisco or Pumping Station: One in Chicago are famous for their open-door approach, welcoming everyone from soldering novices to seasoned pros.

ProTip: Soldering workshops are becoming increasingly popular. Ask your local Makerspace if they offer soldering specific workshops or if they carry soldering tools that you can use. If they do, then you’re in luck, but if they don’t, showing them that you’re interested in soldering might encourage them to offer soldering related classes down the road.

National Makerspace Events to Check Out!

International Community Day isn’t only about celebrating local spaces; it’s about connecting with the broader maker movement. Across the U.S. and around the world, there are plenty of events that celebrate the DIY spirit and Makerspaces.

Here are some of the most well-known ones to start:

Maker Faire: Dubbed the “Greatest Show and Tell on Earth,” Maker Faires happen in cities everywhere, from New York to Tokyo. These events are packed with exhibits, workshops, and demonstrations, showcasing everything from robotics to crafts.

Nation of Makers Conference: NOMCON is a gathering of makers, educators, and leaders who come together to share ideas, innovations, and celebrate the maker movement. It’s an excellent opportunity to network and learn about the latest trends.

National Week of Making: Held each June, this event encourages maker spaces across the country to host workshops, demonstrations, and collaborative projects. It’s a perfect time to dive into making something new!

ProTip: You can also search the Internet for, “Makerspaces near me” to find locations and resources in your area. You’ll find plenty of useful information online, from local events to tutorials, that can help you explore these spaces further.

Get out there and find a space to make something!

To bring your creative ideas to life, there’s no better place to start than a local Makerspace.

Whether you’re interested in electronics, jewelry making, sewing, or any other hands-on craft, Makerspaces make it possible to experiment, learn, and build in ways that wouldn’t be accessible otherwise.

So take that next step and find a Makerspace near you. Not only will you have access to tools and workshops, but you’ll also join a vibrant community of like-minded creators ready to share their knowledge and support your projects.

You never know—you might even discover a new passion or skill that sparks your next idea!
