Auf der Oberseite sieht der Dot genauso aus wie sein älterer Bruder, der Echo, mit seinen Aktions- und Mikrofonstummschaltern, dem Lichtring, dem Lautstärkering und dem Mikrofonarray.

Weiter unten sieht es ein bisschen anders aus. Wir werden von einer Gummiabdeckung und einer Beschriftung begrüßt - und sonst nicht viel.

Für einen besseren visuellen Vergleich haben wir einen Original-Echo ausgegraben.

Und mit "ausgegraben" meinen wir, dass wir es aus der Ecke des Teardown-Tisches geholt haben, wo es seit dem Zusammenbau treu groovige Reparaturmelodien zum Besten gegeben hat.

TL; DR: Es sieht so aus, als hätte Amazon gerade die Mitte des alten Echos herausgeschnitten. Ordentlich!
Not at first. 1st gen dots (what I searched when looking for this) have no volume dial and are held together with 4 screws. Putting the thing back together requires a large exercise in patience trying to align the 4 screw holes for everything inside and not damage the copper ribbon in the middle.

Wir würden gern behaupten, das der untere Gehäuseteil mit Clips befestigt ist, aber nachdem das erste Plektrum nicht reicht, um den Dot aufzuhebeln, schieben wir ein Plektrum nach dem anderen rein.

Wir haben die Unterseite irgendwie entfernt, aber bis jetzt ist der Dot entschieden weniger reparaturfreundlich als sein älterer Bruder.

Unser erster Blick ins Innere zeigt, was anspruchsvolle Tech-Insider sofort als großes Metal-Ding erkennen werden.

Zum Glück hat dieses Metall-Ding Schrauben! Einige lange T6-Torx-Schrauben werden von unten nach oben durch den Dot geschraubt. Unser Schraubendreher schraubt sie unverzüglich aus.

Und schon fällt das Metall-Ding heraus, mit einem kleinen Lautsprecher im Huckepack.

Ja, es ist ein Lautsprecher, wenn auch ein kleiner. Die Verbindung zum Dot erfolgt über ein paar Federkontaktpaare.

Der Lautsprecher haftet leicht an diesem formschönen Stahlklumpen, welcher ein einfaches Gewicht in der Basis des Dot zu sein scheint. Vermutlich damit du den Dot nicht versehentlich über den Tisch drehst, während du den Lautstärkering bedienst.

I have a question for those out there in the know, when it comes to streaming music on the likes of Spotify Premium in high quality. My budget is admittedly limited, while trying to achieve within those limits the most satisfying, balanced and detailed sound possible. I currently have a new Audio Pro addon T10 (identical to the C10, but without Wi-Fi integration), connected via a quality auxiliary cable to the Amazon Echo Dot. The C10 was favorably compared to the new Sonos Play 5 by whatHiFi; that gives you a point of reference.
Now, when streaming Spotify at 320kbps, is the speaker sonically held back by the audio processing of the Amazon Echo Dot, whose built-in DAC is the DAC3203 by Texas Instruments, relative to a potential external DAC? If I go the external route, I want to make sure it is truly worthwhile, as the voice assistant in the Dot is unbelievably convenient for streaming music on the fly.

Nach fast vollständiger Demontage nehmen wir das Kontrollrad auseinander. Es ist ein Doppelgänger des Rades im original Echo, inklusive seines Zahnrades.

Gut für uns, da sich damit Original-Echo und Dot zumindest einige Ersatzteile teilen können.

Das bedeutet auch, dass Wartungsanweisungen für ein Gerät wahrscheinlich für das andere Gerät wiederholt, praktisch geechot, werden. Alles in allem ein Gewinn für Fans der Reparatur und der schlechten Wortspiele.

Most likely SPA1687LR5H-1 since it is connected to the ADCs differential inputs and meets the specs and the dimensions.

does this have the same audio amp as the Echo (TI TPA3110D2)
I am trying to figure out why they did not use mems microphones with digital output and used analog ones with 4x ADCs . Wouldn't that have reduced BOM significantly ??
Looks like those ADCs are more like mini DSPs. Probably has some AGC and some FIR filtering happening in there ...
Maybe the TI DSP chip has no or few PDM interface for the MEMs microphones.
Wish it had bluetooth microphone abilities.
How would you rate its moisture-resistance? Could it survive being in the bathroom during a hot shower?
Has anyone done any serious software/hardware hacks to improve on its performance or add extra features?

Has anyone torn down the new Echo Dot yet? Keen to see if they've upgraded anything of the innards.
I am currently Tearing down the Generation 2. I already got it opened up but wont be able to fully dissect it until next week. I can tell you already there is defiantly some notable differences but over all its very similar.

Has anyone noticed how where (or if) an input signal could be injected instead of microphone. Perversely, I am trying to use Alexa without a mic, and generate the voice commands from a disabled person's AAC device, rather than have to get Dot's mike to listen to AAC"s speaker. The ADC has a digital input, you should look if it matches your output and then solder to it. Alternatively you could use the waveform coming from the output of your friend, use an opamp to create differential signals and the feed it to the same inputs like the micropohes are connected to. Be careful with the cable length though, could create a lot of noise.
On the DM3725 Media Processor is about $45 a chip and $26 in volume. Amazon could have used a BCM2837 quad processor which has a base price of $8.00 ea. Not sure how their making money selling this unit at $50 and making any profit margin. I just purchased the Echo Dot and instead of having the volume wheel they went to a plus and minus button for volume control. So now their are 4 buttons on the top of the unit.
It's possible that they're not making money on these. The quantity of data Amazon can collect from people using Alexa may make it worth only breaking even on this hardware.
In addition, it isn't unlikely that Amazon and TI have a Business-to-Business agreement allowing Amazon to get TI hardware for a unique price. TI will benefit from Amazon using this chip, because a high-profile company such as Amazon putting trust in this chip will inspire other companies to trust this chip. This will likely help TI in both sales and stock prices. Therefor, selling this chip in a MASSIVE quantity to Amazon for a lower price isn't as scary of a prospect for TI. I also agree with Evan, although I imagine they will break even at the very least on this product.
There is no way Amazon is paying $26 for the processor. The DM3725 is a single core Cortex-A8 device with a TI DSP, in a thoroughly mature 45 nm process (probably outsourced to TSMC, to boot), and I'm willing to bet the die size is still smaller than that of the 40 nm BCM2837 with its quad Cortex-A53 CPU complex, GPU, etc.
You can be certain that TI and Amazon have a direct purchase agreement as Amazon is a heavy user of TI mixed signal and power devices in their other products. Heck, anyone selling semiconductors to Amazon is doing so directly, without the need for a distributor (unless Amazon's assembly house uses a distributor for inventory management).
I'm sure TI is doing just fine selling to Amazon, although I suspect the BOM cost for the Dot is still probably such that Amazon is just covering costs with some margin built-in for resellers like Target, Best Buy, etc.
Without knowing exactly how many of these devices are coming off the production line, there is no way anyone can work out the component, or final BOM cost however the silicon is going to be significantly cheaper than the prices quoted above, moreso if there is a revolving contract in place with the supplier. The Dot gen 2 already confirms departure from rotary to push button for the controls, meaning it is no longer Echo's spare rib.
Additionally Amazon have utilised the Poundshop subconscious by pitching it (at least in the UK) at this price. You want a Dot, but to get the free shipping you have to buy something else in the store to qualify. By browsing for something else if only for a few minutes they will have seen what your search characteristics are, your credit detail/records from the checkout to see if it is regular or impulse buying and target accordingly.
I'm more interested in who has access to the voice data since it will remain on a large SSD to be dissected for every nuance, for all eternity.
What is the film tape part in the case? And what does it do? As seen on the side case in step 9
That's a ribbon cable that connects the upper assembly to the motherboard.

This was correct for the amazon echo but I havent tried it on the dot, with the echo you could connect through UART and then grubhack to root it
echo dot 2.. is a downgrade in chips over echo dot 1...from wifi(Atheros QCA6234 to mediatek) , ic , processor ( 20 $ vs 7$), and the plastic is a lot cheaper..
on echo dot 1.. you feel it like metallic..and heavy

Do you have this figured out yet? I’ve determined they are discrete RGB common cathode type parts, but have not nailed down the exact maker yet. I intend to wire them out to remote LEDs.
where do you tap into the circuit board to bring a signal out to an external DAC?
What kind of connector does it have? It doesn’t look like USB-C, which seems surprising, given that that everyone seems to want it to “take off”.
USB-C is for computers, phones and external accessories alike. This device only uses USB for power, so a C port would be too big and more costly to implement than a normal USB micro B port.
What does the WiFi antenna look like? at 2.4 / 5 ghz it would seem to require a very shore one?
has anyone been able to test what the voltage is of the LED lights?
my daughter tried the wrong headphone jack in our echo dot and a piece broke off in the hole where a jack could go. Any recommendations on how to get that out? it’s super lodged in there …..
