Computer Will Not Turn On
The laptop does not turn on when the power button is pressed.
Faulty Power Adapter
Check to make sure the power adapter is plugged in. If it is, make sure the light on the adapter is on. If the light is not on, and the adapter is plugged in, the adapter is faulty. Consider purchasing a replacement adapter.
Faulty Battery
If the adapter is plugged in, and the light on the adapter is on, make sure the adapter is connect to the laptop. If the laptop only powers up when the adapter is plugged in, regardless of charging time, then the battery is faulty. Replace the battery using this guide.
No Display
The monitor on the HP Pavilion dm4t-2100 doesn’t show anything, and the computer is turned on.
Wrong Display Selected
Make sure the screen on the computer is the display selected. To do this, press the key “F4” on the keyboard. If the wrong display was selected, press the "F4" key until the computer screen is selected.
Screen Broken
If there is no display, the screen may be broken and needs to be replaced. If you would like to replace your screen, follow this link.
Unresponsive Touchpad
Mouse pointer does not respond when touching the touchpad.
Touchpad is disabled
There is an orange light in the upper-left corner of the touchpad. If the light is on, double tap the upper-left corner of the touchpad to enable it. The light will be off when the touchpad is enabled.
Touchpad Driver Not Up to Date
If the touchpad is enabled, the driver could be outdated. Follow this link to download the updated driver.
Once on the webpage, scroll down the list and select the "Driver-Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices" driver download option. Then, click the blue "Download" button of the "Alps Touchpad Driver." Select the "Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended)" download option in the "HP software and driver downloads" dialogue box. Save the driver download file on an easily-accessible location on your computer (e.g. Desktop or Download folders). Once you have saved the file, follow the instructions in the dialogue box.
Faulty Touchpad
If the touchpad is enabled, the driver is up to date, and it is still unresponsive, the touchpad may be broken. Here is a link to replace the touchpad.
No Sound From Speaker
When playing videos or music, no sound comes from the speakers.
Headphones plugged in
If headphones are plugged in, no sound will come from the computer speaker because it will be projected through the headphones. Unplug the headphones and sound should come from computer speakers.
Speakers Not Enabled
Right click on the sound icon in the status bar (bottom right-hand corner of the computer screen). The icon looks like a small speaker pointing to the right of the screen. Next, select the "Open Volume Mixer" option at the top of the list. Click on the upper speaker icon under the Device section, which will open the Speakers Properties dialogue box. If the "Device usage" drop-down menu has the "Don't use this device (disable)" option selected, select the "Use this device (enable)" option.
Audio Driver Not Up to Date
If no headphones are plugged in and the speakers are enabled, the driver may be outdated. Follow this link to download the updated driver.
Once on the webpage, scroll down the list and select the "Driver-Audio" driver download option. Then, click the blue "Download" button of the "IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver." Select the "Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended)" download option in the "HP software and driver downloads" dialogue box. Save the driver download file on an easily-accessible location on your computer (e.g. Desktop or Download folders). Once you have saved the file, follow the instructions in the dialogue box.
Overheating
While using the laptop, it will shut off without any notice.
Dust in the Vents or Fan
Computers can overheat from excessive dust or debris in the vents or fan. To fix this, use a compressed air duster to carefully blow the dust off the vents and fan. Follow the directions on the compressed air duster to carefully blow the air directly into the vents on the left corner of the bottom of the laptop to remove dust or debris.
