If smoke came out of the connector, you obviously shorted something out. If it’s anything like the iPhone 6s, if you don’t disconnect the battery while connecting or disconnecting the screen, you run the risk of blowing the back light circuit. Whether or not your situation is repairable, it’s hard to tell. All I can offer is to consult with a board repair specialist to see what can be done.
