Why does my MacBook not boot?

My black MacBook core duo 2.0 doesn't boot. I got it with a broken top case, which I replaced with a new one (i.e. the panel containing the power button, track pad and keyboard). This all seemed to go well. Now when I press the power button, I hear the SuperDrive spin up, but otherwise nothing happens. The computer contains two memory boards, and I tried booting with each one removed - no luck there.

Could it be due to the SuperDrive? Sometimes when I power on the machine it makes the normal spinning sound, but sometimes it makes a weird sound, as if it got stuck (there's no disc inside).

Any ideas?

The source of the problem has been located: logic board malfunction. I've replaced the logic board and now everything works like a charm!

Sounds like a dead logic board :-(

Start up from your CD drive with the system installation disk in it by holding down the "C" key. Go to Utilities - Disk utility and run the disk repair. If it won't see the hard drive, it will need to be replaced.

If you can get to another mac then you can try booting in "target mode". To do this connect the two computers via a firewire cable. Start the MacBook up and hold down the"T" key. The internal hard drive icon shold show up on the other computer. You can then run disk utilities on it ot see if it needs repair.

Was the MacBook working well before you replaced the top case ? If so I'd remove the "new" top case and try the old one to check if the problem is top case related. If everything was working well before and if you did not touch anything inside the machine there's no reason you get this problem. I would also use the ifixit top case removal manual to check if all the screws have been placed at their specific locations. Make sure the top case connector is well seated in the logic board socket.

Thanks for the reply. When I start up the computer it spins up the drive, but there's no chime, so I think pressing C won't do much. In fact I tried, and no luck.

Did you have a start up disk in the drive when you tried this?

Try disconnecting H.D. and insert it into an external USB device.

Try starting up your Mac if it works, your logic board HD Controller defective.

Sorry: (
