My home button stopped working on my iPod touch 4th generation. Everything else is still working fine, but the only way I can close out of an app is to shut it down with the power button and then restart it. Do you think a new home button will resolve this or does it sound worse than that? If so, what would I need for tools to replace it?

Sounds like the little knobbly bit on your home button flex has deteriorated (not uncommon) first step is to change the home button flex cable (ebay it) and make sure you follow the guides on here.
In the mean time you can use a feature on the iPod called Assistive Touch to press the home button.
