Model Number on Back and Model Number in Phone do not match?

I have an Ipod Touch 8GB with the Model Number on the back being A1288. Which means it is a 2nd Generation. The Model Number listed in the Settings is MC086LL which means it is a 3rd Generation. I need to order a new front panel. Which generation do I buy?

I have an iPod identical to yours so I was looking for the same info recently. Essentially the 3rd gen ipod touch was only an incremental upgrade and the devices are identical hardware wise, at least for the 8gb for sure. you will also notice it is hard to find screens sold as "3rd gen". Hope this helps
