will not power on when button is pushed
laptop was working, but now it wont power on and the hard drive doesn't run either.

Usually with Toshiba models such as this it's normally comes down to needing a DC jack replacement. Toshiba uses really cheap DC jacks and really cheap HDDs. Like the comment above you should test the charge first to rule that out.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L655D-SP6003M, when i push the power on button i can hear the fan working and the first two front leds (from letf) turn on, however the screen remains completely black. I have done this without the battery, just plugged the power adapter. Some say i need to replace the motherboard, is there another option?

I've had the same problem. What I did was heat up the CPU (since it's summer I used a blowdryer). Turn it on twice and the second time it booted up. I do suggest getting another laptop, though, as that is what I'm doing. I now realize that this was posted a long time ago and is probably dead, but I hope this answer helps other people.
Have you checked your power adapter to make sure it is working? Checked your battery? What have you tried so far to fix it?
