How to fix broken screen myself?

I dropped my Verizon Galaxy Nexus (SCH-i515) and the screen's outer glass broke. The display itself and the digitizer (touch sensor) seem to work just fine. Is there a DIY method of replacing the broken glass? I've seen the part (the glass front panel) online for anywhere from $15 to $25, but I've also read that the glass and the digitizer are somehow glued together such that it's necessary to replace the whole display (around $150-200!).

Any advice/links/tips would be most appreciated, including a list of needed tools to get this done. I'd just buy a new phone, but I still have a year left on my contract!

Thanks!

Chris, check the teardown on here. It will give you a basic idea about what you are up against. It will also show you the tools needed. Here is also a decent video. Yes, the screen is a display assembly and I suggest to replace the assembly, even so you can probably purchase the individual parts, but they are extremely difficult to separate. Hope this helps, good luck.
