I'm trying to find a replacement spring my for XL's left shoulder button. Does the original 3DS (or even the old DS) use the same size spring? If so, I can cannibalize my old one.

The springs on these are the same. I have never actually switched them, but from looking at them from my parts bins they look to be identical to the naked eye. I would try taking one from the 3DS you have.
Here is a pic of them side by side.

I tried it yesterday and it seems the XL spring is a tiny bit smaller -__-
That's strange that yours would be different sizes. I just took one from an XL and one from a 3DS and compared them side by side (just to make sure I wasn't getting the wrong ones from my parts stock) and they are exactly the same from my consoles. I'm not sure why yours would be different. Strange. I'll post a pic to my original answer.
My mistake, it was my DS Lite that I had tried to open up. So your correct. Thanks for the help!
