I have looked and am unable to determine if the IPad1 i have is 3g or not. I have found places to get either type of screen, but they all say "for 3g/wi-fi only" or "for wi-fi only". will it really matter which one i use?

No doesn't matter if it's for iPad 2 the screen will fit a models of ipad 2
If iPad 3 screen will fit all models same goes for iPad 4
