remove back panel = void warranty?

Hey, If you remove the back panel to check for water damage on the water sensors, will the warranty be voided? I just want to remove, check, maybe dry it a bit if water is in there, then put the panel back on.

It doesn't look like, from your pix and other videos I've seen, there is anything that would indicate the back panel was removed. Is that so?

Also, does the bleach work on the water sensors? Are the water sensors exposed areas the only areas that would be checked by an Apple Tech when you send it back?

Tnx

If you leave the battery in place and can put the phone back together well, Apple will not know that you removed the rear cover.

I can tell you absolutely that there is no physical way that they can tell you've removed the back cover to void your warranty. Now, there is a little contact point that connects with the battery connector which I believe is nothing more than a ground. Though having never designed a phone before, I couldn't tell you if that contact point could possibly be a sensor to detect if you've removed the back cover which is then recorded in the system. I don't know, but really they can't tell.

Okay answer me this, How will Apple know that you removed the back cover unless they remove it themselves to check it? so doesn't that mean they opened it and broke the warranty seal? because there is not sticker on the outside to let apple know if the back cover was opened or not.

How would they know that you did? I didn't see anything online from the vids and pix that shows a tape or seal or any kind of visual tamper evidence. Do you know if they can tell through any kind of tamper evident feature?

I'm sorry but I don't agree with you. I'm pretty sure I've seen some blue stick ("warranty seal" I think)on the inner face of the rear panel... Check the pictures and tell me if I'm right. I've broken mine and I don't know what to do.

I've spoken to an "Apple Genius" who doesn't even know the answer. I've removed the back panel as part of a black to white conversion. That will void the warranty (obviously) but I can confirm there are no warranty connective stickers or markers to indicate this.

Enjoy!!

If you look in the USB connector slot on the bottom you will see a white sticker if the back cover has been removed. I will try an upload some photos of before and after.

I haven't seen the sticker you are talking about.

The sticker at the bottom of the port connector is another water indicator. That doesn't trip by taking off the back. Also, having taken apart many iphone 4's, I can say with 100% certainty that there is no way for them to know you took off the back unless you altered something to change the appearance of the phone. No stickers, no sensors, nothing.

Are you sure that is a water indicator?

I recently took my brand new iPhone 4 and replaced the rear glass the day I got it with one of these:

Now I have the white mark you can see in this picture:

No there is definitely no foreign object in there. The reason I even noticed it was because when I took my old iPhone in for a replacement, I noticed the genius flip the phone upside down and had a look where the white mark now is just before he took it out the back. This got me wondering about warranty seals/marks. I noticed the white spot immediately after replacing the back cover.

Are you sure that isn't a foreign object that became lodged in there?

If you remove the back, you can see there is a relief in the USB port housing that allows for a clip on the plastic bezel to slide in, but not an opening for the back panel to put something in view like a sticker.

I wonder at some level if it even matters that Apple knows you replaced your back panel. I'm not a lawyer, but what I get from the warranty is that if you service your own phone and it is damaged as a result, that damage is not covered. In my opinion that doesn't mean if you replace the back, and the home button becomes unresponsive, it isn't covered. Then again, it doesn't really matter what I think, it matters what Apple says when you go to get your iphone replaced...

Yeah, there has been water indicators in the dock for a while, I'm sure at least the 3GS has the same indicator.

I have produced a warranty seal specially for people who wish to interfere with warranties on products . It is now ready for international patenting. It will detect liquid. You cannot dry it in any manner and if you apply any form of heat you will destroy it totally. No chance on this earth of beating the seal. Your bleach will also destroy the seal. This will be available worldwide shortly. Enjoy

As long as you are careful not to damage the screws. My roommate rounded out the star on the head of one of the screws and they almost wouldn't repair it when the home button started malfunctioning.
