Why cant I save anything to my empty sd card?

I recently brought a new 64 gb sd card for my samsung s4 mini and the phone is not letting me download anything? Ive looked at the storage setting and its showing as available so im confused as to why i cannot access the memory available. ? Please help.. thanks
