do gamecube games still play on a disk drive swap?

Hi I have an 001 model wii that plays gamecube games with a broken disk drive. I also have a newer one that doesn't have the gamecube controller ports or memory card slots. It says it'snot compatable with gamecube games. If I switch the disk drive from the new wii to my old wii will it play gamecube games or not? thankyou
