Hard drive crash, how to recover content?

I have not been able to get into the drive w/Techtool Pro, Disk Warrior or Drive Genius 2. Does anyone have any tricks or other methods to recover the hard drive content?

thanks

This sounds strange, but I've had luck recovering data from "crashed" hard drives (physically fine but the formatting got borked or something) on a PC. There is a program called MacDrive by Mediafour that will let you read Mac formatted disks on a PC. The software has a trial period so you probably won't have to buy it. My theory is that their program doesn't go through all the checks the native Mac OS does automatically. You may or may not get damaged files but there is a good chance the disk will mount and allow you to read it that way.

If your PC doesn't have firewire you can take the drive out of your laptop (very easy for this model, pull battery and three screws) and plug it in to an internal drive to USB adapter, which can be had for about $20.

After reading Mayer's suggestion, he's certainly got the simpler option. Turn on the laptop while holding down the "T" key until a big firewire symbol starts bouncing around the screen. At this point your whole computer has been reduced to an external hard disk with a battery. Plug in via firewire to another mac and see if the drive mounts. If it doesn't go into apps/utilities/disk utility and see if it shows in there. If it's in there you may be able to run repairs or mount read only. If it's not showing or OS X can't mount it maybe MacDrive can salvage your data. Worst case scenario, you can send the drive off for recovery.

Thanks for the target suggestion, just tried that. No luck just black screen, I can hear the hard drive clicking away. By way of history when i boot this g4 I get a blue screen and then the question mark. I will search out MacDrive next. I'm starting to question if maybe something else is wrong.

Ah! If your hard drive is clicking, kind of a regular ticking like a metronome (a very quiet one) you may be experiencing the Click of Death.

This is a hardware problem for which which MacDrive will be of no use to you at all. You may want to shop around companies that offer data recovery services for this drive.

Yeah that's it. Guess I will start planning the memorial service. Thanks for the help

Try start in Target mode by connecting it to another Mac via firewire cable and start the Book holding down the "T" key. will the computer boot with any of these tools?

Yes you can get your files back. But I think the most important thing you need to do is to fix your crashed hard drive. Once your hard drive is repaired, you can consider to find ways to recover your lost files.

But one thing you may need to pay attention is that after repairing the hard drive, you'd better not put any new files into you drive 'cause this may lead to the data overwritten. Once the data overwritten happens, you will lose the chance to recover files.

You can have a look at this post to see if it can offer you some useful tips for solving the problems: http://www.uflysoft.com/data-recovery-ma...
