it wont keep charge? (battery issue)

hey i have had my ipod for a couple years and it suddenly has stopped working. it says connect to power when it is on the charger and when i take it off the charger it turns off i and i cannot turn it on i have tried going on to itunes to reset it but itunes cant find it

please help
