How to repair frayed 3.5mm audio cable.

my 3.5mm cable was frayed, and I attempted to splice it, but no sound is coming out.

I noticed there is a red and a blue coated wire with the bare copper that was inside the plastic sheathing.

Are those insulation? I cant see any metal wires, it seems to be a string like material.
