Electrical hissing from on knob.

I have a vintage Marantz 2220B receiver. There is a hissing sound coming form the on/off knob. The sound last for about four minuets and stops. I produces sound for the unit the display panel light dim for time to time.

brn, Unplug receiver, take the cabinet/cover off component to access switch, check to ensure switch has good connections, spray switch liberally with electro contact cleaner while working switch. Check connections for the lights while apart also. Good Luck.

The hissing, may be high voltage arcing. Being a power switch, it has 117VAC through it, to the rest of the amplifier. Switches are normally on, or off. So they do not normally dissipate any heat. But the old contacts are not making a good connection, so the contacts have a very high resistance. This will cause them to overheat. You may find that the switch has melted, and may need to be replaced. Probably not, but could be a fire hazard. I would "consider" trying to find a replacement.
