Unfortunately, this is NOT accurate for a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport (classic) powered by the 4.0 six cylinder engine.

@crazymomma you did not tell us the engine size for your GC. Here is some imformation from a service manual. Should make it pretty straight forward. On the 4.0 the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) is bolted to the top of the oil pump drive shaft assembly. The sensor and drive shaft assembly is located on the right side of the engine near the oil filter.

REMOVAL - SENSOR ONLY

* Disconnect electrical connector at CMP sensor.

* Remove 2 sensor mounting bolts.

* Remove sensor from oil pump drive.

On the 4.7L engine the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP)is bolted to the front/top of the right cylinder head.

REMOVAL

  • It is easier to remove/install sensor from under vehicle.
  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Disconnect electrical connector at CMP sensor.
  • Remove sensor mounting bolt.
  • Carefully pry sensor from cylinder head in a rocking action with two small screwdrivers.
  • Check condition of sensor O-ring.

INSTALLATION

  • Clean out machined hole in cylinder head.
  • Apply a small amount of engine oil to sensor O-ring.
  • Install sensor into cylinder head with as light rocking action. Do not twist sensor into position as damage to O-ring may result. CAUTION: Before tightening sensor mounting bolt, be sure sensor is completely flush to cylinder head. If sensor is not flush, damage to sensor mounting tang may result.
  • Install mounting bolt and tighten to 12 Nm (106 in. lbs.) torque.
  • Connect electrical connector to sensor.
  • Lower vehicle.

That set up is not for a 98. 95 through 98 they placed the camshaft sensor under the distributor cap.

moser1daddy, I recommend to start your own post and not put your problem under a cam shaft position sensor post if you want more people to look at your anti theft problem.

If it's a 93 or 94 it's inside your distributor, take off Distributor cap, mark its position, then pull the whole distributor out, the cam sensor is at the bottom
