Can I upgrade my IBM ThinkPad T60 to a 64-bit CPU?

I recently recieved an old ThinkPad T60 with a Core Duo T2400 CPU in it and 2GB or RAM. Is it possible to upgrade the CPU to a newer one, for example a Core 2 Duo, and would it be worth the time and money? Also, would it be possible to upgrade the RAM past 3GB if it had a 64-bit CPU or would that still not be possible?

Arie Copley-Radder "would it be worth the time and money" I do not think so. Remember that in order to actually notice a CPU upgrade you will have to run programs that are CPU extensive (large CAD/CAM drawings etc. come to mind) otherwise you may safe a few microseconds during everyday-tasks. I'd go with some more memory and maybe an SSD but would leave it at that.

I normally would agree, but when I upgraded my Dell Inspiron 6400 from a Core T2300E (Just one model down from this guy's processor) to a Core 2 T7600, I was able to run 64-bit programs. Applications launched significantly faster, and web browsing also improved. I do some basic 3D modeling, but the motherboard-integrated graphics still couldn't handle it, and this guy likely has 945GM graphics chipset, just like most other laptops that use this series processors.

Short answer is: yes, you can. Actually I made this myself. My beloved T60 came with the 32-bit T2300 processor (https://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/C...). After researching (https://support.lenovo.com/br/pt/solutio...), I discovered that the T60 accepts up to the T7400 as an upgrade. So, I bought a processor of that model for around US$30 on Aliexpress. I had no idea if it would work, but it worked perfectly. In fact, I was using a Debian Linux distro, which stopped officially supporting the 32-bit architecture, which was the motivation for buying and upgrading the processor to a 64-bit model. I read somewhere that someone had managed to install the T7600 (https://deepbsd.github.io/thinkpad/pc_di...), so maybe it will work, although on Lenovo's website there is information that T7400 is the maximum that can be installed on the T60. Good luck!
