Can I add HD to my 27" iMac w/SSD existing?

Most want to replace their existing hard drive or swap the HD for an SSD -- I want to go the other way.

I have a Mid 2010 27" iMac that I bought with the existing SSD installed. I'm now looking to add a hard drive in the bay where there is plenty of space for it.

There is a power cable available, but no extra SATA cable (it is already on the existing SSD.) Is there a way to add the second drive?

A SATA cable comes in the box with a lot of the internal drives, just look on the box. Any computer replair place will have plenty of these lying around that you can probably get for a couple of bucks.

UPDATE - I've learned a lot more about this since I gave this answer: Installing SSD as a main Drive on iMac guide?

Hello David. What you're thinking of should be possible if you have one of the July 2010 iMacs, as it sounds that you do. There is a third SATA port inboard on those models, but it's slightly tricky to get to and you'll require some non-standard SATA & power cabling, as well as a mounting solution. I would suggest checking out the following site for additional info:

Cheers,

Jason.

Hey David - Did you ever figure out how to pull this off? I'm looking into doing this as well. I bought a refurbished 27'' imac w/ the 256GB SSD and want to install a second HD for bootcamp. Hope you can get back to me. Thanks

Update

Mayer, thanks for that SSD install link. I bought the following items from AppleComponents.com for the 3.5" HD install. The HD mounting pins are pretty pricey so I ended up buying just the bracket screws. I made my own HD pins by cutting off two of the screw tips. The brackets were mounted to the imac with some leftover screws I had. Hope that helps anyone.

+ good for you, did it work?

Yes, the second hard drive gave me enough room for windows via bootcamp. :)

Let me be more clear: there is no sata cable available on the iMac. Nor is there an obvious port to connect the sata cable were I to buy one. This machine comes with a build-to-order SSD + HD option so I assume it's possible, but it's not at all clear how to do it.

So, my question is: can I add an HD to the existing SSD such that I can have two drives as in the BTO option? The only obvious in-place cable is the power cable. There isn't an (obvious) SATA cable (nor is there a secondary thermal cable.)
