Lost text messages when changed contact name

I went in to edit a contact name.

Today I noticed that the past text thread with that contact is now gone. I only have 2 messages from after the edit of their name...

Is there a way to retrieve the messages?

And what did I do that all the messages are gone so I don't do it again!
