Can I upgrade my laptop to a 64 bit processor?

I've installed Windows 7, which is a 64 bit OS, but my laptop is has a 32 bit cpu. Is there any way that I can upgrade my Laptop to have a 64 bit cpu?

Thanks

The 64 bit computers can run both 32bit programs and 64 bit programs. 32 bit computers cannot run 64 bit programs, because the bit sizes are fundamentally different. Latest Laptops with pre-installed Windows are usually x64 i.e. 64 Bit, old Desktops and Laptops could be having Windows x86 which means 32 bit.

OK I finally found some useful info. I am including a URL for specs and drivers. According to the spec sheet the computer is suitable for 64 bit but you may be having driver problems. I you can download the program from MSFT that checks your computer for Windows 7 suitability.

If you need drivers this program will tell you. Ralph

If your computer came with Vista you should be able to use Win 7. Ralph

Look up your cpu to see if it is 64 bit.

It looks like your laptop (product page) might have these processors:

  • Mobile AMD Sempron™ 3200+/3500+ (1.6/1.8 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache)
  • Mobile AMD Sempron™ 3400+/3600+ (1.8 GHz/2.0 GHz, 256 KB L2 cache)

According to Wikipedia AMD Mobile Processors your processor has AMD64 technology, which is 64 bit.

So if you have 64 bit Windows 7 your processor DOES support the 64 bit OS, but like Ralph said you may have driver issues.

Upon further investigation if you check out the downloads page for your model they have placed a nice red 'X' in respect to Windows 7 support. You could try downloading the latest drivers anyway to see if that fixes any of your issues.

"Upon further investigation if you check out the downloads page for your model they have placed a nice red 'X' in respect to Windows 7 support. I have installed Win 7 on 5002wmi, 5240x3, AOA 110x2, AOA 150, and A0751h(before the A0751h was approved). I also am a M$ Beta Tester - Win 7. the Editions I tested and installed on above mentioned = HomePremium-Professional-Ultimate. The only one that has PROBLEMs is the Win7 Approved.(The NEW BIOS 2.1 SLIC problem (hence I had to convert the GRAPHICS down to BASIC). while the unapproved works 100%. All versions were x86 (32bit). have not tested x64 on the Acers... If I convert the A0751h back to NO SLIC BIOS the Graphics works perfect. DUH DUH this is also with 1 Unit sent back 3x to Temple. and reported a 100% PERFECT. yet customer had (sudden FREEZE problems)_FREE MEMTEST will also tell you if you have dual core or single core. or simply choose x64 to install - if allowed then you know x64 works... if not allowd the program simply TELLS you not approved. and you can select x86...

As pointed out your laptop is already 64 bit capable, so there is no need to upgrade nor would it be capable if already 32 bit.

To see if you are running 64 bit do this: Open start menu > Right Click Computer > Click Properties > Find in the window the 'System' section > under that find 'System Type' it will say '64-bit Operating System' if it is.

Also as pointed out there is no Win 7 driver support much less 64 bit. I was going to suggest to try the 64 bit Vista drivers, however upon looking it appears there are no 64 bit available.

A small side note is there is no need to run a 64 bit version of a OS unless your computer is using more than 4 GB of RAM; 32 bit versions work just fine.

You have to see a list of processers that can be used to upgrade your laptop. Or you could find out what cpu socket you have and see what other processors have the same socket type.

If your computer mobo supports x64 - your manual will tell you. easy to read that info.

If your manufacture tells you OS is not supported, it might simply mean they DO NOT SUPPORT.

I find many many Windows XP systems will run Windows 10 , so make sure your manufacture tells you

NOT SUPPORT by them, the only true test is Insert the media and boot to. if the BIOS you are currently using supports the UPGRADE it normally will work....

so

1. always upgrade to the latest BIOS supported by your MOBO...

2. you should TEST the new OS by insert the MEDIA (DVD or USB) and run SETUP.

if will either install or stop and tell you Not Supported.

3. Every x64 System will run x86 OS but not ever x86 can run x64. READ THE MANUAL.
