250 Mbps from ISP. 686 Mbps Cable modem. Is the modem powerful enough?

Hello,

I have a Motorola MG7540 Cable modem capable of up to 686 Mbps. My ISP is providing 250 Mbps download speed. Is there any issue here? Am i correct in thinking that it will never need more than the 250 Mbps that the ISP is providing?

Often times the cable ISP will have other options in both downstream and upstream services. Alas, you will end up pay more for that service.

As far as your Modem: Think of it like a car… You have a nice Porsche which tops out at 183 MPH! But of course you can drive that on US highways? Nope! In Germany the Autobahn has a speed limit of 130 km?h (81 MPH) in dense areas so you still couldn’t go flat out in and around the city’s. So having a Ford or Saab will likely suit you.

So having a modem that is able to work at high data rates is not a bad thing if the cost was not to much more than the standard modem. At least you could upgrade your service if need be.

Hi Jacob, Please share ISP you are using.

One way to confirm, you can actually call your cable provider to confirm.

I guess is to just provide them the MAC address and they will do the provisioning at their backend.

Yes. If the cable modem can provide greater than or equal to the speed of the internet connection, it will be fine.
