I started my car this evening, and when it started there was a tapping noise, I could hear it while I was driving, in idle, pretty much until the car was turned off. I have never heard this sound before. My car says I have 55% oil life remaining. But lately the engine has been getting hotter when in idle for too long.

Possibly your tappets. This explanation may help you. You may ne lower on oil than you think:
